The other day while activating a 1L of em I thought why not buy some botanicare hydroguard and use that as a stock culture? BHG is just an isolated form of bacillus bacteria and surely it can be used to ferment molasses in the same fashion as em1?

If this is the case then you could make 40L of Hydroguard for the price of 1L(ex molasses ect)

If anyone is interested in trying this experiment that has the product in their possession it would be a massive help.

A 1L EM1 recipe scales up or down easily enough.

40ml em1 + 40ml black strap molasses + 920ml water to give dome breathing space in the 1L bottle for shaking ect. When pH of the solution drops to 3.8 or below and has rested at this pH for 5-7 days its ready for use.

That's how simple it is to make activated em1 so it may be the same for Hydroguard and if it is I am sure there will be many deep water culture and autopot growers thanking you for your assistance.

I have posted this thread in the organics section in the thread Russy's FPE but I do not think many organic growers bother with this product vs just buying EM1. Unfortunately EM1 will produce a biofilm in your rez and according to many personal accounts and the sales pitch the Bacillus Amyloliquefaciens strain will not produce a biofilm so is better suited to direct hydroponics vs EM1 being better for soil.

I would realy like to do the experiment myself but shipping hydroguard is more than twice the price of the product ex vat and import fees..... If a person does this experiment and is successful then I will splash the cash as that 1L will last well over a year.

Come on do the experiment you know you want to not only for SCIENCE but also for GREAT JUSTICE!

Ill drop this external link here for people who want to save a lot of money on enzyme products as its a direct comparison between cannazyme vs bokashi vs pond cleaner but it is offsite.

This link does not promote a product or service that can in any way compete with the sponsored sellers here on grass city. Just thought I would share the good info I found here.

If there is a problem hopefully a mod can remove the link and then ill just post a good search definition that will get you there.

No idea what EM1 is really, but this sounds interesting. Hydroguard is expensive
Well if you have some hydroguard lying around and feel like sacrificing 20ml for the cause then you could potentially end up with 500ml of Diy copied Hydroguard.

Does it matter that the shelf life is like 6 months after opening?
Can you clarify what you mean by does it matter?

All the em1 products have about a year shelf life after opening even activated em lasts about a year and the stock mother cultures last 4 according to the manufacturer so I am a little suspicious about only 6 months use by date after opening.

Well it says a shelf life of 6 months, if you don't believe it then have at'er lol. Just wondering if the bacteria is dead by then. Hydroguard I mean. I have no clue what an em1 is.

EM1 are effective microbes basically lactic acid bacteria(probiotics) with various bacillus subtilis bacteria.

Hydroguard is a single strain of bacillus bacteria called Bacillus Amyloliquefaciens which is derived from chicken poop.

I use hydroguard and am happy with the results. Ran teas but actually got a terrible case of rot while running them the last time (not using hydroguard in the tea but have heard of it and quite positive results), if In fact it does have a shelf life then not really helpful for me, it's pricey but not prohibitive, I get 3-4 grows from a gallon at $50

The Activated version should last about a year if its anything like its other bacillus cousins.
Yeh $50 for a gallon is not that bad considering it sells for $22 for a quart. but 6.5galons for the price of a Liter is even better.
