Europe Can't Understand

i came across this article (http://worldblog.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2010/10/28/5360324-europe-dismayed-as-midterms-highlight-obamas-struggles) while doing my daily search through the trash that passes for news and it just highlighted the many differences between what we are and what many folks would like us to be.

there is a certain naivete in the european political sphere that we here seem to lack. we are certainly as capable as they are of falling for the rhetoric of political animals and hoping for that utopian dream of universal equality, but our realism always keep us from taking that fateful leap into the quagmire of socialistic dependency. where the people of numerous european nations are willing to place an inordinate amount of power into centralized government or follow the rabble and press for policy that seems to be in the best interests of the population as a whole, we always seem to return to the idea that it is more important for the individual to retain his rights than for the majority to exert its control. maybe it's their history, replete with monarchies and the abuses so common to the absolute power wielded over serfs by the traditions of royalty, that leads them to so easily slip into a mob mentality. maybe it's that remembered history of empires that demands they deliver so much power into the hands of those in command. maybe it's just a creeping decrepitude of cultures so far past their prime.

whatever the reasons, they don't seem to understand the underlying conservatism of the american people. they actually believed that the election of the messiah signaled some great sea-change in the attitude of the u.s., that we were going to swing more in line with what they saw as the right and proper course for civilization and abandon the individualist tenets that have grown this country into a major power on the world stage. they don't seem to understand how we could give up the promise of the interdependency of the herd for the pain and uncertain reward of a more individualist method.

i know there are quite a few folks who would love to see us follow the european design, to enter into servitude to the state and abandon dreams of greatness. they often view our history as one episode after another of swaggering egotism and expound on the many sins we are certainly guilty of. i can't help but wonder why they refuse to acknowledge all the good that has gone along with the bad. why is it they seem to forget that this individualistic conservatism has created a nation more powerful than any that has ever come before and more productive and inventive than any nation in recent memory, with a people that has proven itself to be more compassionate and charitable than anywhere else on earth?

are you referring to the million frenchmen refusing to give up a good way of life (retiring at 60) EVERYBODY there enjoys because they know the only reason the money isn't there to pay for it is because the upper 1-3% of their economic eschelon want 10 more supercars in one of their 20something homes???

or are you referring to the hundreds of thousands of belgians pelting their government offices because they want to fuck over the poor??

yeah, here in america, the rich can fuck over the poor with little government intervention and hide behind a scream of SOCIALISM!!!!

in europe, if the government doesn't do the job the majority of the people elected them to do, which is to look out for the well being of all of it's citizens (even the poor ones), the people hit the streets.

democracy expresses itself in in europe in more ways than america can dream of.

but no. europe is a socialist hell hole. :wall::wall:

Now there is a pile of horseshit if I ever heard. Yeah conservatives may have started this country, but that doesn't mean they own it. A day of reckoning is coming, stay tuned. This election will drive people over the top when they see the idiocy of the new right wing crazies, stay tuned.

this is precisely the point. the fallacy of democracy is that it promotes freedom. what is democracy, after all, but mob rule. unless that mob is spectacularly well informed and altruistic, it will roll right over the rights of the few and even rationality itself. a man has the capacity to be the most intelligent creature on earth, but the mob is more beast than man. the mob revels in its power and seldom stops to think what is logical or even possible. the mob sinks to the level of its lowest constituent and uses the power of numbers to force its will upon all those around it.

yeah, the mob the mob the mob.

europe is engulfed in turmoil because the rich want to fuck over the middle class, but the middle class far outnumbers the rich.

the european people know the most dangerous thing to their well being would be to allow it's middle class to stop existing.

the rich are working hard to make that happen, the government is just standing by, so the people hit the streets.

you call it a mob. but they have a concrete reason to be hitting the streets and acting like a mob. i think its beautiful what's happening over there; and shameful we don't have similar demonstrations here.

but here it would be called terrorism, and you would be wisked away in a private jet to somewhere in eastern europe........

just how are the rich "fucking over" the middle class? by balking at usurious taxation? by refusing to support an unsustainable situation? yeah, yeah, yeah - the rich are trying to screw the middle class, the middle class is trying to screw the poor, the poor are trying to screw the rich and on and on. everyone is concerned with gaining some advantage. it's the way a great deal of this life is, so quit whining about it. there may be brilliant bits of true charity and altruism mixed into the mess, but everyone is just out there scrabbling for their piece of the pie. in a rational society the people would be able to maintain their control through a free market, but europe has already screwed that pooch. the people have already demanded to be treated as children, insisting that the successful maintain society while the vast majority do as little as possible and march on toward some illusory retirement of ease, and now they are squealing as daddy finally exercises his parental authority and tightens a few of those purse-strings. it isn't beautiful, merely childish and sad. in case you haven't noticed, a great deal of the west's economy is in the process of imploding. there are many folks who have lost a huge chunk of their savings and belts are being tightened all over the place, but that hasn't seemed to sink in with the entitlement crowd. they all seem to think that the world economy has nothing to do with them. we see the same garbage here, as powerful unions insist on gouging management as if business were booming and making the rest of us pay for their luxuries.

the only beautiful thing about it is that they have the freedom to gather and protest, a freedom that most don't fully appreciate. your feeble insistence that such is not possible here rings particularly hollow and shows how little you appreciate the efforts of your betters.

What you said about demonstrators being seen as terrorists and being taken away for rendition probably has plenty to do with people not demonstrating. That and the fact that only about 1% of Americans are aware enough to understand what is going on and what is about to happen.

The teachers at my Kid's school have informed me that next year they will be doing away with letter grades and all children will learn at the lowest common denominator seeing as no child can be left behind it appears we are churning out ever more simple minded children. They grow up to be politicians.

Europe is fucked by a bunch of spoiled brats who want a guaranteed job for life, 1 month paid vacation, great pension and retirement. That's great and all until Humble Chinese workers take all the jobs for half the labor cost and countries start going broke trying to prop up the entitlements. I don't see how rich people are fucking anyone over, they use the least amount of state benefits/subsidies yet pay the most for them, how the hell is that fair?

that some manage to take the benefits afforded to all by society and turn them into great wealth will always be a bone of contention for those willing to live lives of mediocrity.

europe is bloodying itself up in defense of a strong middle class.

conservatives in the US have been filled with so much noise from faux news, that they've lost sight of what makes a country great.
