that's not a bomb, it's a bunch of flammable stuff. sounds like dude cleaned out his garage. the firing device didn't even work. probably took the half dead batteries out of his TV remote to trigger it all.

We'll find out what the deal is with this, but it would probably have been quite bad if that thing had exploded. I guess all that 'see something, say something' shit worked.

It was some kind of homegrown terrorist. It will be interesting to find out why they did it. I suspect there is all kinds of physical evidence left behind. Someone is scared shitless now because our entire government is mobilizing to find these people or single person. It may have been just one person.
the scary part is, ... there are thousands of people like this out there. they just lack that last bit of courage. things like this start happening and it may motivate more people. this could get ugly quick.
the bomb was janky, which can be even scarier. looks like any old joe shmoe is willing to blow things up these days. even if he's clueless to how to actually make a bomb.
Perhaps we need another civil war. I am prepared for it. Life is about preparedness. The people who work in this country are soon going to grow very tired of support those who do not work. Soon individuals will realized that we are being denied constitutional rights and maybe something will happen. Our government and our society are not operating in a sustainable manner.

so it was either a right wing nut job, a left wing nut job or just a general all around nut job. you can't say such a thing shouldn't have been expected. our politicians are daily getting up in front of the nation and decrying another industry as the enemy of the people. each day another section of our economy is under fire from the proponents governmental intervention and it's no wonder the feeble minded are being inflamed by the rhetoric. the u.s. has created incredible wealth in its 200+ years and now we are being told that all those riches rightfully belong to us all. this load of crap is being swallowed whole by far too many folks and they are bound to do something about it. each bump in the road is latched on to by power hungry political animals, doing their best to push an agenda of control on an ignorant and envious public. new rules and regulations are being forwarded as the answer to all our social ills and the only ones who really benefit are the politicians who make those rules. inept, overpaid and easily corrupted, those politicians are fast becoming the guiding force behind an army of discontent that they themselves have created through their abuse of power.
Whoever it was doesn't know the first thing about explosives. About the worst thing that would immediately happened was smoke, then possibly there could be a fire from the fireworks, which in turn would probably need to get pretty big for it to cause the gasoline containers to burst, then how long would the propane bottles need to be immersed in flames to pop? The fertilizer is a joke, you can't burn fertilizer to make a bang. You mix the fert with a fuel oil and then need a large concussion and heat to ignite it. Commercially available explosives are called ANFO ( Ammonium Nitrate Fuel Oil) and are used for 95% of all commercial work. The fert in the ammo can would somehow need to be mixed with fuel oil and since none was on site its obviously a failed attempt and not a serious attempt.

This article thinks it's possible that the attack was supposed to be in retaliation to south park episodes 200 & 201 since it was near viacom offices.
That's fucking ridiculous if it's true; I can't believe people would consider mass murder an appropriate response to jokes made in a cartoon.

i'm not trying to argue about the possible political or religious inclination of the person.
i think it's safe to assume for now this guy could be an american. i hope i'm wrong.

was it a coordinated attack? that very well could be the case.

NEW YORK – Police investigating a terror attack that could have set off a deadly fireball in Times Square focused Sunday on finding a man who was videotaped shedding his shirt near the SUV where the bomb was found.
Police said the gasoline-and-propane bomb was crude but could have sprayed shrapnel and metal parts with enough force to kill pedestrians and knock out windows on one of America's busiest streets, full of Broadway theaters and restaurants on a Saturday night.
The bomb "looks like it would have caused a significant fireball" had it fully detonated, police Commissioner Ray Kelly said.
A large amount of fertilizer rigged with wires and fireworks was found with the bomb, but police said it was not the ammonium nitrate grade that can explode.....
