Farmer Fuck Ups.

so my dad emailed this link the other day...as a farmer, i find this shit hilarious...and sad at the same time...i wonder how many of these accidents happened under the influence...

the picture with the air seeding rig that ran through the power line tower was due to GPS and Auto Steer...people are watchin the GPS and not where they are going or they have the Auto Steer on and they arent paying attention...happens quite a bit. when that shit first came out, i said it would be dangerous for those reasons. anyway, heres the link..

that is awesome. all these stories about people driving off of roads and into lakes and shit because the gps told them to. i love it. i would have thought farmers would be exempt.

lol no dude, farmers are worse. you give all these new high tech gadgets to all these old timers that cant even turn on a computer (my dad is one of them) and they just fuck shit up. we have a GPS for our sprayer and i fuckin hate it, there is too much other shit to watch.

it does work great though if you just glance at it once in a while to make sure you're on the right line...when spreading fertilizer i used to have to stop and get out and pace off 40 feet every once in a while....now i just shoot a glance at the GPS when i turn around at the end of the field and i know i'm right on track.

farmers literally fall asleep at the wheel. you get out in a huge field that takes 20+ minutes to get to the other end, you turn around set the Auto Steer (keeps the tractor driving straight) and then you just sit back and do nothing..so they fall asleep or are watching a movie and run into poles and ditches and shit.

“It’s his fault,” he shouted, pointing to his copilot. “He’s supposed to be watching the signs for weight limits not me.”

i have to cross a bridge just like that every year...about 20-30 times a year with the tractor and grain cart...kinda scary with a 100-200 thousand pound gross weight..although the one i cross is a little better than that one..

this was great. +rep

i'm no farmer, but i just got a job working outdoors and with plants. it is great. i can only wish i had a job as challenging and unique as farmers do.

a lot of these hazards of farming never occurred to me before. gives me a new respect for farmers.

thanks. glad you enjoyed it.

i do love farming...the hazards make it more fun sometimes. i think most people dont realize what goes down on the farm.

we've had our share of fuck ups...never any major ones by me though...knock on wood. the air brakes on the semi didnt set and the truck rolled into a ditch and flipped over and spilled about 4500 dollars worth of beans all over the road...we had to hand shovel all of it, that fucking sucked. our ex business partner has hit 2 telephone poles in the middle of the field. our sylage wagon axle broke on the last load of the day, i was driving but it wasnt my fault..the wagon was old and abused...i laughed pretty hard when i say that picture in the link, same exact story as mine. the doors on the storage bins have opened and spilled hundreds of bushels of grain all over. our corn dryer caught on fire and burned down one of our barns and almost 4000 bushels of corn was destroyed. my dad broke his neck and back in a farm accident. crazy shit goes on. i have been stuck in the mud more times than i can count...gotta see if you can make it thru the mud sometimes lol.

Nice post.........I have been in construction machinery my whole life............Tragic, but shit happens. Worst day I 've had was when they layed a 200 ton manitowoc crane boom across six lanes of traffic on I-35 in Dallas. No one was hurt, but traffic was fubar............

actually loss of arms and legs are more common.....Loss of fingers are butchers.
correct. the loss of arms and legs are quite common because machinery gets plugged up, then you gotta go diggin around in there with your hands and feet to get it unplugged....if you dont have the tractor out of gear all the way it could jump back into gear and take off or turn the machinery back on and rips your appendages right off. its not such a big threat anymore with newer equipment, lots of safety features on the new stuff, but most farmers cant afford new stuff so they are still running old, unsafe equipment. you just have to use your head and NEVER be in too much of a hurry.

my dad fell and got his coat sleeve wrapped up in the tractors Power Take Off Shaft which turns at 500-1000 RPM...wrapped him right up (think of twirling spaghetti around your fork, and the PTO shaft is the fork and my dad was the spaghetti) and almost tore his arm off, his coat was wrapped around his neck so tight it literally almost popped his head right off, he had to chew threw the collar of his Carhartt jacket so he could breath. broken neck, back, arm, skin was tore off and his ears were also ripped off his head. he died for almost 3 minutes too. this was almost 20 years ago now.

cool stories, bro.

injuries..not really loss...of the hands are most common. ive broken almost all my fingers and the backs of my hands are covered in scars.

i remember that incident...i think it was a crocker crane....i believe it was working in conjunction with another crane setting some bridge spans...i was in the crane bus. for seven years. i think the biggest whiners in the world are crane operators lol. just thought id chime in as ive been in the const. industry for quite a few years, peace and be safe.
