First Grow - Aerogarden

In a couple weeks I'm going to be starting my first ever grow. Going to be keeping it small for personal use only. After reading through some of the different threads on the Aerogarden (Tek and the the other AG people get a huge thanks) I ordered one yesterday and it should be here in about 10 days. I'm hoping to have my bedroom closet setup and ready to go for growing by the time it gets here (cleaning it out, more lights, mylar, etc).

I'm going to be using some random bag seeds from a friend of mine, so no idea what or how many different strains they are.

I have some questions to help me prepare. I've read through the huge Aerogarden thread and there's so much information and variations to take in at once. I've probably read the answers a dozen times.

1 - Nutes: Haven't bought them yet and will have to mail order them since there is no hydro store around me. I see that Fox Farms is recommended a lot. Are there any others that are good? If I go with the Fox Farms should I get all 6 that are listed on their site (3 liquids, 3 solubles) or are there only certain ones I need?

2 - Germinating: I plan on germinating in the AG. I've read that no nutes should be used for the first 2 weeks but Fox Farms says to use them.

3 - Water: Is distilled water what I should be using from start to finish?

That's all I can think of right now. My plan is going to be plant in all 7 pods to better my chances at females. I may pollenate one of the females for seed, I have no idea what strains I'm planting so I'll probably have some weird hybrid of some sort. I haven't decided if I'll clone one of the females and keep it as a mother, not sure if my closet is going to be big enough to keep a mom in veg and setup a flowering box.

I'll keep everyone posted and may even start a journal. I've still got a lot to learn but I think it's going to be a fun experience for my wife and I.

I used spring water from the start . also you should add an air stone and pump. 9 a small one 3'' will do fine .. i would germ them in paper towels and then add them to the aerogarden after they sprout .( they sprout faster that way ) also use the tomatoes setting on the unit .. After all that the hardest part is waiting ... good luck Vette

1. not sure about fox farm, but i am using General Hydroponics supplies.
they have a simple three bottle kit. a MICRO a GROW and a BLOOM.
easy to use which is good cause i am newbie and use AG also.
GH ph test kit is good as well. everything priced o.k.

2.GH recommends very reduced amount for seedLINGS and new growth.
seeds are not seedlings or new growth and have their own reserve of "food" to last about a week.
so, No to nutes on seeds, yes too seedlings and new sprouts >week growth.
Germinating in AG is o.k. but may take longer than paper towel method. i tried both and prefer the AG only for handling reasons. Although, many AG users report having to "adjust" the seeds to point in the right direction (up). i have done this, as well as setting new seedlings lower in pods after 1-2 weeks depending on stretching for light. MOD YOUR LIGHT and LOWER IT.

3.water - RO is best but need all nutes you can think of.
Distilled is very good with low ppm and can get at local pharmacy or drug store.
Clean well water with low ppm is good as well. i use this.

hopefuly others will chime in and set me correct if i missed anything.

long time smoker, first time grower.

good luck and keep reading while you waiting for growth:spew:

Sorry you got such crappy seeds. Use Pro Line Grow and Bloom. You cant afford enough distilled water to make it work. Use tap water which has been allowed to vent the chorline for a day or two..by letting it set with the lid off. This is my first AG grow too..but I dont do illegal stuff so I am growing Habenero Peppas. Dont get caught they put you and the little bride in the calabooso. Maybe even take your toys...homestead..sled..etc. Who knows. It just like Nazi Germany over here. Forget the Mylar..paint the walls floor and ceiling flat white. I picked up that tibit on here so if it aint right it aint my fault:) Kindly keep us posted on your grow. Best of fortunes to ya my friend.

You can go a week or two w/o nutes....If you still don't have any by 2 weeks just one tablet of AG nute dissolved first to a gallon or little less...untill you get your nutes...I like the whole foxfarm line used a little weaker than recommended...Keep PH steady too...

2 - Germinating: I plan on germinating in the AG. I've read that no nutes should be used for the first 2 weeks but Fox Farms says to use them.

Germ, in AG if you want or paper towel, but if you do the aerogarden make sure to wet the sponges and keep the light off, but water circulating...place them a little less than half way down the sponge, rip the sponge in half...

3 - Water: Is distilled water what I should be using from start to finish?

If your area has good tap water you can use it straight, I do...you could let it sit out if you want, but it don't think it's necessary, I'm sure r/o water is good to or distilled, purified whatever....I thought well water was bad for the AG....

the airstone and pump arent needed but can't hurt....

Also your going to have to do somthing to make the hood go higher unless you get a seperate HID or somthing...

Good Luck

Well I think somebody is limiting their horizons on this well water topic. Its all different when you get down to it. Now it shouldnt have no cholorine in it but could be a tad salty or gypy if it from this part o the world. Not sure why I keep saying I got a certain type of nutes but I got Pure Blend Pro or similar to that. Now I hate to jog any memories here but as sometimes as happens to Osaka and Hillary but you the one who say to forget about the fill to here liine..and fill it on up to top. So thats how I been doing. If that goofy pump runs any it dont run much at least on the Peppa and Tomater setting. I think the airstone is mo important than the goofy pump which they put in the thang which as I say dont never run. Let's try Hempy Buckets next time. I mean all you got tied up in it is a bucket and a coupla bags of some kind of exotic dirt. I am already collecting my buckets. That give a lot more room for roots and stuff. No non working pump needed..blah blah blah. Let me know. We can still keep the AG's for cloning if anybody ever figger out how to do that kinda stuff. They can clone sheep nowadays. How much harder could it be to clone wacky tobaccy? .

Thanks for the replies.

I have an old 1 gal fishtank and air pump/stone. I was planning on using that (buying a new stone though). I think I'll try germing with paper towels. As soon as I find out exactly when it'll be here I can plan on when to start germinating.

Also your going to have to do somthing to make the hood go higher unless you get a seperate HID or somthing...
I was thinking about going with the deluxe or deluxe upgrade kit but couldn't justify the extra price. I've been brainstorming on how to set up the closet and at some point I'll be removing the hood and hang it from the shelf or set up a seperate flowering area on one side.

I should start taking measurements and begin planning out exactly what I want so I won't have to disturb my (hopefully) girls later.

Dennis Leary is right. Smoking pot doesn't lead to other drugs, it leads to mother fucking carpentry

Ive been growing lowryders in my aerogarden for a month. and i'm using a half tab of the nutrients it came with. i just dissolve it in a 2 liter bottle of water thats been left out for 24 hours. one of my lowryder plants is huge. but lowryders don't like a lot of nutrients.

Congrats. Sounds like you fixing to be a proud papa:) Im fairly flabbergasted as I have only one plant up and growing normal. Have several which seem to be just hovering around green as a gourd right below the paper disk thangs. Only thing I can figger is it must be two hot for em. I been trying dilligent to keep the ph in range. On a hot day it hit 90 in there purty easy despite all my heat removal expertise. Whutcha think?

yeah heat can ba a pain in the ass. i'm gonna have to figure out a way to cool my room. my leaves are perspiring because some of the fan leaves had to be tied down and are touching other leaves. i didn't know a lowryder could be such a pain lol. i just hope its worth it.

not sure of where your room is located, but mine is in the attic and i am still having heat issues no matter what i do.

BUT, i may have just come up with a solution AND the fact that i am typing it out means i wont forget about it in half an hour.

anyhoo, my idea:
like i said i have mine in attic and have access thru the walls to run a 1 or 2 inch pvc pipe from the basement and hook up to the intake for cooler air. hmmm....
pretty sure this will work for me as i have been trying to find a non obvious way to get cooler air from the lower parts or my house into the grow area.
plus its my house.

keep smokin and thinkin....

sounds like a good plan massbaster. luckily for me i think i just need a good fan my room has a window so its well ventilated.

I'm a recently retired Marine. Waiting on my m.m. certificate. Anyways, new to growing and planning on using an aerogarden. I have some advanced nutrients stuff. Am I supposed to use the nutrient pills in addition to the a.n. stuff or am I to only use one or the other? Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Anxious to start the 4 seeds I do have. I've got alaskan ice, blue widow, nebula and mazar kush. Anybody had these? Many thanks.
