First Grow Bagseed w/CFLs (pics)

Hello everyone! So, a couple weeks ago I decided I wanted to try my hand at growing for personal use. I have decided to use the CFL route. I am going to turn an old chest of drawers into my grow box, inspired by some other growers on this website. This forum is an awesome resource and I am trying to learn as much as I can.

So my last bag of chron i bought had some seeds in it. I germinated 3 successfully, planted them in some miracle grow soil my girl uses for flowers (I have no idea what kind but it gave us some awesome tomatoes this summer!) and set the cups on the window sill not expecting much. Two days later low and behold I have 2 plants! So I was like "Shit, I gotta do some planning!" I turned an old chest of drawers into a grow box. Here are some pics at Day 7 since planting.

Soon to be grow box!

Thanks for looking!

DAY 8:

OK everyone, it's been 8 days since ground break. I added some ice packs to bring my temp down to around 80. I looked EVERYWHERE today for a small fan to put in my box with no success. Finding a fan this time of year is one challenging task! Anyway, the ice packs will work for now. I did find a little wind tower fan. I'll put a picture below...I wonder if this will work? I haven't really seen much growth progress with the plants in the last 3-4 days. Maybe they will take off in their new home. Here are some pictures:

Close up of plants:

I'm going to switch to 18/6 today around 5PM. Hopefully, I'll see some growth and these babies will really take off. Any suggestions would be appreciated since I am a complete newbie!!

Nice seedlings Swale ur doing fine. They're going to soak up that light soon, you'll see. I saw you write something bout a new home, are you planning on transferring them here soon? I was able to find me a 5$ fan a Wally world if you have em around. They're like 5" i believe and do pretty well, but you said you have a tower fan i believe so that should work too

This IS the new home I was referring too, haha!! I have looked at every Wal-Mart in my area and no fans what so ever. I guess its the time of year. I did find the wind tower, but it is just too big for my box. I am going to buy this camping fan that runs off batteries. I guess that will have to work for now. It claims I can get 300 hours on one set of batteries. I am in the process of making a reflector and adding a couple more lights. I'll update tonight!

Yeah.. new home looks good.

You wont need additional lights for awhile. Chck my journal.

Youre right about getting a fan during winter... Unless it has a heater yer shit outta luck. Snag one up online. Greatest thing about e-commerce, is there arent really seasons.

DAY 11:

OK, 11 days since ground break. I added some Mylar today to my box. Jesus, that stuff is hard to work with...at least for me it is! They were switched to 18/6 yesterday. And I found a fan! I found a grow shop in my area. I have never been in one before. It was baddass, I picked up many ideas for my next (and hopefully better) grow. Still dealing with temps 82-84 range. I can tell the fan also dried out the soil a bit in the white cup. I am scared to water though until necessary. I watered just 2 days ago and almost immediately the plant in the green pot began to droop. How soon do you think I should transplant these into some FoxFarm soil? Well anyway, here are some pictures. I appreciate all the help everyone here has given me....this site is an awesome resource!

Crappy Mylar job, but it will do for now....

Mylar looks great!. Not sure on the details of your setup but if you can position that fan so that it is blowing on the light and the plants that will help a good bit; another thing you could do to help bring that temp down is to have that fan pulling in some fresh air from outside cabinet, this will also refresh the breathing air for your little girls.

PS: Get those things in some FoxFarm asap!

Thanks for the ideas! For more info on my setup here is my link to my grow box details:

As far as getting the fan to pull in air from the outside, should I make an intake hole? Or should I just leave the door cracked a little bit? Thanks again!

intake hole would be ideal and if you could have another for exhaust that would be perfect. You should notice a nice difference in your temp if you do that.

I want to throw a question out to all who have been reading the journal. What size pots should I transplant these babies into? I was thinking 1 gallon, but that would mean I would have to transplant again down the road. They will be going into Fox Farm Ocean Forest soil. I also might mix it with perlite, but I am having trouble deciding on a ratio. The 18/6 seems to be helping!

Thanks!

OK, not much to update with today. BUT, I am seriously considering going with a DWC setup in a 3 gallon rubbermaid with these seedlings. I know I have to decide soon. I have been reading tons lately about hydro and it just seems the way to go. I will definitely want to do hydro for my second grow, so I figured why not try it with these girls and learn as I go. I'll update some tomorrow, as I will probably go out and buy what I need for my DWC grow.

OK folks, for the few of you who have been following this newbs journal, here is an UPDATE!!!!

I decided to make the switch to DWC. I now have these girls in a 5 gallon rubbermaid. They are now 2 weeks old, and the stunted growth is probably b/c of the soil i had them in. Hopefully they take off in a couple days or so. Here are some pics...I just put them in their new home 15 mins ago or so!

DWC setup.....(first ever so don;t make fun!)

Up Close shot....hopefully they adjust and take off for me!

Thanks for looking! Criticism/suggestions is appreciated!

Looking good, Swale.

Don't be surprised if they don't grow for a few days, but once they do, they will shoot off really quickly.

Best of luck with the bagseed. I hope it turns out better than the crap that I grew on my first grow.

Not much news today. I am not really expecting them to take off right away. I am posting a couple pics, because the bigger plant still has curled down leaves and has now began to show some brown spots. Its hard to tell from my somewhat blurry photo. My inclination is to do nothing for a couple days. They must be still recovering from the transplant to soil

Both Plants.....

Plant with droopy leaves and brown spots......

Thanks for looking. Hopefully in a couple days these babies will take off!

This could have been an awkward comment had you put "their clothes." at the end of it... and been staring into a daycare window.
