hey guys, so i've been researching the last couple weeks (95% coming from this website) got all the stuff i need, and am currently germinating some different types of bagseed. I have a 1000 watt hps, and one cfl, my question is after they germ and i putt them in my little cups, is it okay to put them under the hps? also, i was given a drip system for hydro, can i incorporate that into growing with soil? any help is greatly apprectiated! thanx to everyone for such a great site. can't wait to get some experience so i can help the next guy out :-P

Go easy on seedlings. The CFL can handle things for at least week or two before you hit them with the 1000w.

No on the drip system if you are using on soil. Soil needs to get dry and then be flooded, get dry and be flooded. A constant wetness leads to all sorts of trouble.

yeah, what Picasso said.
When you do hit them with 1000w have it a good distance from the little ones, (3 - 4ft) until they have a few sets of leaves.
When they start to stretch for the light you can bring it down.
Also make sure your ventilation is sorted and you have a good amount of circulating air. Those 1000w pump out some heat.

yeah i was worried about heat and ventilation, i thought about using one of those holmes walmart fans tape some ductwork to the front, tape that to the hood, then have some more duct and a diy carbon filter attached to the other side of the light. would that work? i gotta keep in a small budget this time around... also would one cfl start 15 babies?

I don't really know what a holmes fan is but the main thing you need to do is exhaust the heat out of your grow area. Carbon will stop the smell but will still expel heat if it remains in the grow area.
Any light will start seedlings, but it's strength will determine how they grow once they break through.

a holmes fan wont work for venting your light. it will work for circulating air in the room. to vent the air out of the room you can get a 4 inch, or 6 inch in line fan at home depot or lowes for under 30 bucks. its in the hvac isle, its way cheaper than anything on ebay. they are round and will connect right to a 4 inch or 6 inch vent hose. they also have 8 inch fans, that might be best for a 1000 watt.
