First Grow - Propagation Area Lighting Advice Needed

Hi all!

I'm another newbie that has been inspired by the various grows on this forum, YouTube and articles/forums all over the internet. I have done a lot of research over the last few months and am keen to get started, however there is some info that I'm lacking on.

I'm starting to design and build my grow areas. My seedling/clone area is approx 3x2x2ft. I am looking only to accommodate for around 10 clones/seedlings at any one time, so this space should be more than sufficient. Growing from feminised seeds, I will then pick and choose the two best/healthiest/fastest growing seedlings for my veg area. Area will be lined with diamond Mylar.

What kind of lighting would you recommend that I use purely for the early growing stage for my propagation area? After this, they will go in the veg room which will be a 3x2x5ft area with a 400w MH lamp (or similar blue spec HPS), so I need the best advice really for the early plant stages that will lead to this point.

Money is not really an issue, neither is the amount of electric consumed - but obviously I don't want to run a 400w lamp when I can use a 125w CFL when the results are exactly the same. Quality is what I'm aiming for here ideally, I don't want to cut corners.

Thanks!

Hey dude sounds like a nice set up. For seeds/clones i keep them under a T5 fluorescent until they are 6 nodes, then move em up to a 250w envirolite/cfl that beast them through a couple of weeks of veg, and then finally finish them off with a 400W.
Sounds long winded and extreme but over time growing your own you experiment and pick up more n more equipment.

This works well for me, using the hps too early just produces a really leggy, ugly, stretched plant. Using fluros for the best part of veg produces the exact opposite.

Welcome to RIU.... either of the suggestions above would work perfectly. I currently use simple CFL's for vegging now. Run some splitters so I have 4 bulbs per plant. Holds them nicely for 1 - 3 months before I throw them into flowering under a HPS.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Well, welcome to another friendly grower...you will like it here! Sounds you are really thinking thru the process, starting with propagation. I use led to start and then expose them to the 600W out in the tent after the 4th or 5th node shows. Again, welcome and keep us informed bro! Peace
