you need you some daylight 6500k bro
Growman, you are absolutely right. You also have a cute dog, and a nice pile of fish. I'm gonna get me a 6500K pretty soon.

So.....I watched some grow guide videos:
Stone Free

Home Growing

And decided to do a little revamp:

WARNING = AWFUL CELL PHONE PICS AHEAD:cry:

1. Seeds

The seed I originally planted was light green. I've learned that light green seeds are often duds. So I looked through my bagseeds and found some better candidates:

Sorry for the crappy cell phone pics...

The ones on the left are pale green and small, like the one I planted. I originally intended to wait a week for it to sprout, now I'm pretty sure it won't ever sprout.

Then I decided to apply a tip I saw somewhere(?) to help the seeds germinate:

I shaved a teensy bit off of the sharp tips of four seeds, and then:

Put the four seeds I had prepared onto a wet paper towel, which I folded up and put into a plastic bag.

2. Setup

I set aside my gigantic pot full of dirt and a dud seed, and placed my seed packet underneath my light. It's still the 2700K bulb, which ought to work to sprout my seeds.

As you can see, I also cleaned up the rigging somewhat and made it easier to adjust the height (square knots instead of clove hitches, for the boy scouts in the audience)

3. New Plan

plant my four seeds (or however many germinate)

grow em until I can sex em

KILL THE MEN (sorry fellas)

Get some buds

Make a mommy plant to clone from

Question:

Are there any good guides for establishing and keeping a mother plant?

i wudnt use more than 2700k for bud. but for veg i found it dont metter if u mix spectrums aslong as thers more of the 6400 spectrum
and yea u can use lots ov different types for a seedling . i use to use a 18w 5000k tube til they had 2 sets of leafs and worked sweet, i put clingfilm over the pots until they sprout, it acts like a little greenhouse and the soil dont dry out .

I've been trying to germinate the seeds in a wet paper towel, sealed in plastic, underneath my grow lights.

I think HerbalAddict was right, I need to do it in the dark, warm.

I'm going to follow this guide from a1b2c3

ALSO

I'm having trouble finding cfl socket splitters, the y-shaped thing that lets you plug two bulbs into one socket. They ought to be at lowes or home depot, but I haven't found them there. Oh well.

ALSO

I want to plan ahead for the stank. My grow room is right against my roof, and connects to a space that runs the length of my house. The only entrance right now is a door; there are no windows. I could put in a carbon filter, but it would have to come out of the door, which would look wierd... any suggestions?

Can you cut a hole directly out of your house? Then just place a vent cover on it. and scrubber and vent out that way? If heat is not an issue you could just vent back into the room after scrubbing it maybe? Or is this bad if anyone else knows? Never heard of venting back into your same room before.

As for the lights. For less then $80 I picked up a 150w HPS light WITH FIXTURE and BULB. Seems to be very bright. Will get pictures tonight. Hopefully I will be able to use the light tho. I might have to pull my plants from my stealth box.

 So technically, yes, I could cut a hole directly out of my house. However, I really don't want to ;)

I like the idea of scrubbing inside the room itself. Maybe I'll dream up some kind of combo carbon filter/CO2 box to both reduce the smell and add fresh CO2 to the air. Stealth inside my house isn't a huge deal. My wife's on board, and the room is out of the way, so guests probably won't ever see it unless we want them to.

That's a really decent price for the HPS setup. Where did you get it?

Just checked my seeds, and one of them has cracked! The little tap root is just peeking out to say "hello world".

 :leaf:  :leaf: :bigjoint:

I put them all underneath a bowl for darkness, but I left the light on to keep the heat up a little. I might be ready to pot in a day or two!

Thanks for all your help everyone, and to this forum, for keepin me goin. I'm sure I'd have given up by now without your encouragement, before I even had a seedling!

Just down the street from were I live. A place called five point gardens. Might have been on sale. Not sure. The only thing it really didn't have was something to hang it with. It did have the metal hangers for the light itself but nothing to hang it on such as a chain or rope. So I went to the store and got a rope. Now I can put my scouting skills to work and tie some knots to help me adjust the light. hehe

well, so far still just the one seed has cracked open. The little root tip is just barely poking out. I'm a little worried because the tip turned black. If I don't get sprouts in a few days, I'm just gonna try to germinate all of the seeds I've got left and take the strongest ones.

On the upside, I located a hydro grow shop nearby, so I might be investigating some more advanced methods...

bro get yourself an airtight container,
wet a paper towel and fold it up so that it lays flat on the bottom,
drop your seeds on top and put in a dark place for a day and a half,
you will have easier access when they are ready

Phew! Good news. The sprout with the black tip has turned white again, and is about 1/4" long, so I'm gonna plant him/her. I'm hydrating a jiffy pete disc thing. I'll put the germy root pointing down about 1/4" into the pete, then put the pete into a smallish plastic cup.

What should I put around the pete?
1. Miracle grow?
2. Pearlite?
3. Nothing?

Should I be at all concerned about nutes, or does the seed provide that for the next couple of days?

Thanks growman, iwir3d, et al for the advice and reps and encouragement! My wife is still kind of on the fence about this, and I've often thought of just scrapping it, but honestly, if ever there was a victimless crime, this is it.

do it up man, dont let things get you down on growing,
doing what your doin the odds of something happening is slim to none unless you do something stupid,

i reccomend perlite its good shit and comes with nutrients already in it if you buy MG perlite

I heard MG will lower thc.. anyone else know anymore on it? I use a MG potting mix. As for nutes. You really don't need to add any to your watering. The nutes in the soil should be fine for now. Untill about 4-5 weeks maybe or when ever you start to flower. It's better to have to little nutes then to many because you can always add more but once you add to much it's hard to take back o.o

You're welcome. I will be watching this grow and giving my 2 cents when I can.

Happy Growing!

Isn't that the same thing kinda. Either way I have personally used. Here are some bud-shots of my last grow.

That's with MG used for "some" not all of the grow. For the most part no nutes were even used. My soil was fine. These are also using CFL lights. I used 12x 26w (100w equiv blue burning) for the entire grow. Yes, I needed some red burning light but I didn't have any or the money to get. So I would say this is an accomplishment and maybe this will give you something to aim for?

HERBAL ADDICT and marijaneindeed, haven't heard from ya in a few, would love to get your input. I'll check out your forums and say some funny things to get you back on board... :hump:

growman3666 and iwir3d, you guys have been just awesome! We were discussing potting mediums for my seedling, which is in a jiffy-7 peat pellet. Here's what I decided to do, yesterday:

* cut drain holes in the bottom of a plastic cup
* lined the bottom with a tissue
* added 1/2" of perlite
* placed my jiffy-7 peat plug into the cup
* surrounded the peat with perlite
* planted my germed seed, root down, about 1/4" into the peat
* put the cup in a bowl, put the bowl on top of my paper-towel germinating bag, put the whole mess on top of a saucer
* covered the top of the cup with clear plastic wrap
* put it under 1 CFL 24/0

Today, I found that two more seeds have germed! One is almost ready to plant, its root tip has just started to extend. The other has a visible root tip, but it hasn't started to grow out yet.

Hopefully, one more will sprout, so I can grow up at least 4 plants to sex.

The grow room was a little chilly, maybe around 60F, so I added two more CFLs and surrounded everything in tin foil to keep the light and heat in:

Kind of looks like a backyard-nuclear reactor
