My friend who grows told me that he switched from his 400 watt HPS that was over 4 plants to two 250watt CFL lights over 4 plants and his yeild is still the samer per plant. Can you really flower plants with CFL??

Oh hell yeah u can. I run 6 hoods of t-5's 430 watts per hood.
No as good as a 1000 HPS, but if heat is an issue they the Dogs Bollocks!

sure you can flower with CFL lighting, saves a bunch of money. but CFLs dont have the same penetration as a HID, a 400 watt HPS is really for small grows anyway so its reasonable to assume that by using 2- 250wt CFLs, placing them closer to plants, generating less heat, a similar yeild can be obtained. if your serious about growing i suggest at least a 600wt HPS though.
ps. make sure you buy a CFL with a 2500k spectrum for flowering.

Heat is a problem for me. I'm going to be growing just for my personal use, could you recommend a good CFL set up for flowering 4-6 plants of medium height? I grow with foxfarm soil and nutes to if your wondering haha

i cant remember the specific brand i used last time, i just wandered into the hydro store and picked out a 125wt CFL. I had it in an open room so i had no heat issues, plant leaves were safe inches from the bulb without burn or heat issues. fox farm is a good brand and you should do well with it.
though a single 125wt CFL would probably be sufficient for your grow (if in a growbox where light would be reflected back onto plants) i have always used one CFL per plant and successfully grown plants 3 1/2 ft tall under them.
good luck with your grow

I have the Sunblaze but I don't use VHO just HO. VHO is wasteful, burns out the bulbs quicker and is not cost effective.

Also - check out the thread by the pr0fesseur (LEDS without LEDS...) where he is using aquarium T5 bulbs and getting great canopy penetration.

He's screwing up somewhere and blaming it on the HPS but yes you really can flower with cfls.

Does VHO bulbs really make that big of a difference to the total yield in the end? And could you post a link to the thread? It'd be very helpful xD
