Fluorecent T-5 lights

I just bought 2-4 foot T-5 useing 2 red and 2 blue per T-5, How far away can the plants be and still get good results ? ( VEG ONLY )
I was useing 2- 1000 watt Mh but the heat was too much for the little ones.

Common sense dictates close enough to not burn them.

Yes, but unfortunately then common sense won't answer the question until you have already burnt your plants.... and magically that doesn't seem to make much sense either.

Keep your T5's in the range of 3-7" away at all times and both yourself and your plants will be happy.
