Free bug control

I know of a couple different home brewed bug sprays, but I was wondering if there's a way to lure spiders to my plant?

I only get a bug once or twice every few days, so I don't want to be spraying my plant for a problem that's not too big.

A resident spider would be safer, but none have moved in.

I love garden spiders. :D

To encourage spiders in your garden, you'll need two things:

1) A place to hide when they're sleeping. Those tall, ornamental grasses work well, or any kind of thick ground cover. Ceramic or stone objects that are hollow inside with small holes in it also work really well.

2) Food. Spiders will only stick around if there's enough food to keep 'em healthy. If your plants are outdoors, then chances are they can live anywhere. However, indoor grows are often a sterile environment and won't support a predators needs for too long.

When growing outdoors, I've had great success with planting sweet alyssum as ground cover. It grows nice and thick only about 6" above the ground, with even shallower roots, and makes a great home for all kinds of beneficial bugs including spiders because it grows so thick and also lures lots of bad bugs in for easy snacking. ;-)
