So I only want to grow a few plants, they are coming up out of soil, can I use sunlight from windows or must I purchase a light? It is early here, my house temps are 65-70, I wont take outside until next month after last frost. They are in peat cups and I will transplant to larger pots to keep in the house and put outside to acclimate to temps here. So should I put under lights? I want to keep them small until transplant next month? Thanks, this is my first grow.

The plants are likely to get "leggy" or stretch as they search for light in a window location. They may also go into premature flowering since getting the maximum number of daylight hours would be tough (moving from a eastern window to west etc.) Consider picking up a few 6500k CFL's or T-5/T-8 flourescent lights and keep the light only a few inches away from the top of the plants. Turn a fan on them (low speed) every few days to make the main stem thick and sturdy. Prune the top of the plants every 1-3 wks to make them "bushy". This also helps to keep them at a more consistent height which makes lighting them much easier. Check the FAQ's section of the forum for more info. on pruning.

Well congrats there bud on the new grow. As far as putting them near a window, It probably woodnt work the best, first because they would likely stretch like crazy and second because if they are in one window, the sunlight only would shine on that window for probably half the day which is almost no light. I would suggest putting it under some cheap lights called cfl 23 watt, the spirally ones, and they are pretty cheap. You can pick them up practically anywheres, and around here they are 11 bucks for a 3 pack of them. Im not sure how many plants you have, but starting off a good idea would have one light per plant. It would be ever better if you could put the plants in some kind of grow box with reflective material on the inside walls. hope that helps. :weed:

^^+ Rep for the above post. Nice info for a beginner.
Buy one or 2 6500k compact fluorescent light bulbs, they will keep it alive until its ready to go out.Keep them about 4-5 inches from the plant tops and depending on your situation a small fan
to strengthen up the stalks.if you cant then you need to wake up in the morning put them outside and bring them in at night this will prevent frost and still give them enough light:weed:

hey im in a northern climate and i dont have much room to grow inside but i manage. i ordered northern lights for outside but they havent come yet but i will probably germ them right when they get here. I germinated a whole bunch of seeds today to plant outside that after they crack i will put into jiffy cubes in a walmart bought 72 cube tray with dome. Im probably gonna be planting as many as possible but realized that they will grow a good size in a month. is it ok to leave them in small individual containers and keep them from growing a bigger root system thus keeping them from growing much bigger or could this really damage them in the long run.

thanks, i have a tinfoil/aluminum tray to use to keep in, (they are in peat pots). i am going out to buy some fluores lights like you suggested. i have a box fan in the room to keep on low. i can open the window on warmer days to exhaust or just use the air in the house. i am shooting for at least ten plants, then sex them (will need help) then hoping i get one or two females to transplant early, see if they survive (around april 15ish) or keep them in a outdoor grow box to prevent frost and cold temps, etc... i am getting excited, little buggers popped quick! this is like science class in gradeschool!

idk if u can see sex that early without changing the photo period and you dont want to start flowering them in april. They probably wouldnt start flowering until august or so. I have a grow from some seeds I ordered and I just started germinating my seeds. plan on planting them outside after the last frost or around 4:20. been getting really good weather lately so we will see.

So they are seven plants in all, threw out a few not enough room. They are in 8 to 10 inch pots, mg organic soil mixed with perlite, under a total of 9 cfl's that are mostly cool 6500k 23 watters, have two 32 watt 4100k and two 2700k for good measure. Only measuring soil moisture, not ph just yet, but let tap water sit for >24hrs so shouldn't be a problem. Three plants are really growing faster than the others, they got schultz's plant food 10-15-10, they seem to like it. The plants have been vegging for at least two weeks, the bigger ones are about 4-5 inches tall and there are some indica dominant (very big leaves) and some other plants with thinner leaves, maybe indica-sativa mix?? Anyhoo, they seem to be growing slower than expected but who cares, no hurry to put outside yet, they had some problems in the beginning but seem to have corrected themselves. They are on a 18/6 light cycle, temps fluctuate between 75-80 with lights on and the temp drops to around 65 with lights off, humidity always around 50% drops to 45% with lights on. Have a box fan blowing on them on low, they are in a closet with tin foil covering the lower walls, paint is light yellow. So this is as high tech as I will get, just vegging until I can get outside at the end of april or early may, short growing season here so hopefully they will be fat and bushy and take to the outdoors, have my sites ready and dug up just need warmer temps and no frost! Peace

Yea the CFL's don't really
grow quite like hid but its ok slower is better some times,if you can keep your temps 68f-75f at all times you will be set, other then that it sounds like your plants are doing good so keep doing what your doing but like i said if you can get the temp down 68-70degress you will see the difference in growthbongsmilie
