Germination Problems HELP!!!

I use the paper towel method and for years had no problem. The last 4 times I went to germinate my seeds (from a great seed bank) 1/2 of the sprouted, then I put them into jiffy plugs CAREFULLY and they just stopped! I am going nut's! I have never had this problem, I keep my hands and utensils clean, I just dont f-n get it and I am out like 350.00 in seeds!!!!!!!! Oh noone can get near them but me so I am not getting screwed with (I do my best to keep good karma anyway). I am using feminized seeds but I always have. Someone Please give me a clue!

keeping them in the dark? nice room temp water? ...the way i do it is put the paper towel into a cup with the seeds folded in a crease at the top where it was folded once in half and its already wet before adding the seeds so they stay put, then kinda roll the towel around your hand til its a perfect fit for the glass and then fill about halfway with room temp water and swirl it about two times a day to make sure everything stays nice and moist...i feel this is the best thing to do since it mimicks nature and also i disagree with the bag method i dont see a benifit to stopping gas exchange...my germ rates are near perfect 2days on average. just stick to basics they have to stay wet wet wet until they are no longer seedlings and keep em dark..not much more to it maybe you just had some bad luck and they were duds

most times bad germitation rates = bad seeds.

Did you say Jiffy Peat pellet plugs???


It can be done but it is risky with oversaturation,and PH flux of the peat.

I just plant straight to moist medium,and will not touch Jiffies,except for bagseeds.

I gave up on the paper towl thing and just soak them in ph'd water for 36 hrs, then put them into root riot pellets (the soiless medium ones, no dirt, no rockwool). They are germinating at almost 100% for me now. Sorry about your seed loss, that sucks so friggin' bad.

If you went from a perfect batting average to hitting .500 then something is wrong. The number
of failures tells me the problem is probably with you.

I had the same thing happen to me. Come to find out my problem was a spray bottle. I let the
bottle go for months without bleaching it out to clean it. I bleached my set-up and my germ'ing
problem disappeared. Try bleaching everything.

It could be that the shell is too hard, along with a million other reasons, some of which the guys on here have mentioned. There is a method you could use i call the sanding method, get a match box and line in with some medium sand paper, put in your seeds and close the matchbox, shake it for about 60 seconds and then germinate. hope this helps, GW

Not the peat one the brown foam things rapid start I think, They also have another rand called jiffy something

I used peat pellets let and sprouted 19 of 20 seeds, I just mist them with my water bottle, let them get upto size, then pop a seed in. I dunno what you did wrong man. Over saturation? Not enough moisture?

you cant over saturate a seed!! ...heres an experiment for proof take some bagseed put it in a baggy folded in papertowel with water (not the method i use but the most low maintenance for this purpose) then leave it in a closet or something with no light check it in a week and you will have nearly white brussel sprout looking 3-6 inch plants growing throughout the papertowel..you cant kill a seed with water and its reallllllly hard to kill a seedling with too much water as well

i'm having the same problems m8t, first time only 3 seeds sprouted then died when i put them in soil,
the second time i got 6 to sprout, only 1 came thro the soil and stopped after about half an inch .

I had the same problem not 350$ mine was 150$. I also do it the same way and usually have no prob. I just figured it was a bad batch.

to anyone whose plant is sprouting then dying as a seedling...your most likely under watering. ive NEVER had a seedling stop growing after the seed successfully popped and its very simple, pop seed, plant about an inch or so deep in already fully saturated soil using distilled water, and keep it moist until its about 6-8 inches then start a normal watering cycle

OK here is what I did, I got 8 outta 10 to pop so far, I then put them in smal RW cubes , now it's hurry up and wait, what I said pop, the shell were cracked good and over half of them had about 1/8-1/4" tap roots. I took Pics I hope I can get them posted without screwing this up! LOL

Man I never get this right, shit! LOL, OK I hope these pictures come out ok, I screwed up and put in a shot of 2 seasons ago but I am doing a ebb & flow thing for the winter. as I hope you can see I put the seeds into small RW cubes and have them under the light. Please look at the ligh if it is too close let me know. If you see any screw ups Please say something.
