i have access to straight up horse manure that sits in a gigantic manure pile for weeks and months

i see mushrooms growing on it all of the time after rain

is this stuff a good substrate? i can get fresh straw as well

can i pressure cook the manure in jars? how should i process it beforehand?

I have not gone to the poo tek but if memory serves me right you want leached manure. It should have no smell and should have hardly any color left to it when you break it open. If you skimmed the sides of the pile you should get enough for what you need. If it is fresh stay away you want the old stuff that just about turns to powder when it is handled.

I believe u gotta pasturize it.. But yeah bro them shrooms r prolly good ones..
yeah the thought crossed my mind

but i only turned my interest towards shrooms recently

if i see them on the pile again i will take a picture and grab one to dry out in case they bruise blue and are worth looking at

i have a 200x digital microscrope. i am not sure if that is powerful enough to look at a spore print

thanks for the help man

awesome, this is great advice. thanks. the stuff 30 or 40 yards back in the pile is probably about 3 months old. i'll see if that stuff fits your description

If you have such a pile, why don't you consider actual compost, it isn't that hard to make and you will find that it is far better than raw or leached manure.

my knowledge of shrooms is limited and i heard they occur in nature almost exclusively on dung, but i could be wrong there.

the pile isn't mine, i just have open access to it

i wanna make a compost bin

the organisims you are interested in are primary and secondary decomposers - that is they will happily eat straw, paper, cardboard, grain as well as your secondary sustrates such as manure (unless it is too hot), or - what they like best of all, well composted manure/straw mixtures.

The best of all substrates in my opinion is compost, secondarily straw and then raw manure. Leached manure is not much more than partialy decomposed straw.
