the ones your friends are talking about at walmart are not HID and if they are they are shop lights and wont grow your pot very well. IMO the 400w hps or 400w MH setup is your best bet. It probably wont be enough to grow 20 plants at the same time though!! you could probably do 10. I grew 8 under my 400w MH setup but that was because i couldnt fit anymore in my space. check my grow journal to see pictures of them now. on 12 days flowering. anyways, its worth it if you plan to continue to grow and want high yeild of your plants. also get some good nutes. like technaflora, advanced nutrients or fox farm nutes for bigger denser buds :)

first those pots are too small. you better be ready to transfer your plant when it gets taller. as for lighting if your a cheap guy high pressure sodium: 107 lumens/watt and the more priceIE go for metal halide 90 lumens/watt

do you even know what the hell you're talking about?? Im guessing you dont. FIRST OFF, LUMENS depend on how big the space is. Secondly LUMENS and WATTS arent the same thing. THIRDLY, if you read the entire post you would see he's trying to grow 10-20 plants. what youre suggesting wouldnt even be enough light.

please... dont fucking post unless you know what you're saying. stick to lurking until you understand.

Thank You!

Disregard what everyone's telling you, cause you need to spend as little on a light as possible, because not only are you going to have to buy that, but also a oscillating fan, a carbon scrubber, and some sort of ventilation (not cheap).
i disagree - light is your bread & butter - more is better

CFLs if you're broke (warm & daylight)

HPS if not

MH/HPS switchable if you're flush

DELUXE MAGNIFIER FLUORESCENT LAMP, 5-D POWER BRAND NEW - eBay (item 350066319523 end time Jun-08-08 20:51:04 PDT)

i was thinking of getting that lamp to start out seedlings, and 2 like little plants in my closet. I was going to put in my huge closet, and just let the fan blow air in there, and hopefully they can grow strong. Would that work?I looked online and people said that flourescent works pretty good. Would that lamp be good for now since thats like 40 > thanks again for all your input!!

lol. sorry to laugh but no that light wont work. Im not sure what your price range is but seriously if you're on a cheap budget go get a bunch of cfl's for like $50 for all you'll need at the hardware store. you can even shop around because sometimes they have sales on CFL's but seriously... you're better off getting CFL's than some weird ebay light like that.

if you want to use ebay then spend $100-$150 and get an HID (mh or hps setup) but it sounds like youre on a budget so CFL is the way to go.

I dunno what to tell you to get cause im not an experienced cfl grower but someone here can tell you exactly what you need for your grow space. how many ect.

Get a used T5 system and start small. Add some small HID security lights and CFLs as the plants get bigger. Remember, nutes, soil, pots, fan, electricity all cost money. I had a 400w MH for a brief period, grew some nice veggies in the garage (not a mj grower, but almost was for a sick relative of mine), but had to return it due to the huge amount of heat being produced by it. When the season ends that I can have veggies outside, I'll either go T5 (very nice, had one of these before too) or cheap T8 shop lights from Home Depot (more the better, vertical and horizontal for the win).

But if you can afford it, HIDs are the way to go for sure.

ALSO: I advise everyone to check your local craigslist when looking for HID setups. seriously you'd be surprised how many people are selling them and for dirt cheap. found one yesterday on there (didnt buy it) 400w hps for $45 with a bulb less than 100 hrs on it!
I just bought a Used 1000W HPS HydroFarm Ballast and Fixture/Lamp and a 6RPM Hurst Lightmover $125,

The New MH Conversion Bulb and Bottle of Fox Farm Nutes cost me more: $129.

craigslist classifieds: jobs, housing, personals, for sale, services, community, events, forums

lol well i'm gonna go ahead and go with the cfls then. But can i stick those bulbs in like a light bulb socket in my closet? Because i figure i would grow them there in the closet like 2ft below the light bulb. And then see how they do, is that how i should do it then?

This is not my idea, i'm not taking credit!Quote:

That makes my investment per bulb about $30, which is way, way more than I had bargained for. I'm checking the Net, but a cheaper alternative remains elusive. Help me out here!

I would get 6 outlet power strips and connect "Y" converters on them to plug in your CFLs. You can use 3 spots (only because of the bulbs bulkiness) and 3 y's for 6 sockets on 1 power strip.

This would save you in the long run, you could get 2 power strips and 6 Y's for a total of 12 sockets to put CFL's in.

Here is my gheto setup but it shows what I'm talking about. I'm using one 6 outlet power strip with 2 Y converters for 4 cfls. This makes only 1 thing to plug in (the power strip) and it's very convenient.

Next step would just be making some type of hood or bolting the power strips into your growspace.

The power strips are quite cheap , proly around $5 and the Y converters are something like $2 each.

Hope this helps

I stole the idea from that thread...but mine is much neater...with foil tape....they say dont use aluminum foil because of hotspots. White walls, or mylar. Mylar can be bought cheaply by buying some of that foil wrapping paper...the back is mylar. The inside of potato chip bags is mylar. Also you can go to cheaper than dirt website...it sells surplus army stuff...those reflective blankets come three in a pack for about 10 bucks.MLT-4948 - Emergency Blanket Package of 3 Double Sided Reflect-Insulate - Manufactured by: Military There's the link!
