"the constitution grants the president an extraordinarily broad pardon power to cover all federal offenses. And of course the president can commit federal offenses. That's part of the principle that no man is above the law. And so as a textual matter, it seems rather open-ended and implies that I think that the president can pardon everyone under the sun and including himself. And the many interesting structural arguments that Brian relies upon are things to consider. But as I said earlier, I don't believe the president is judging himself when he's granting other people, judging, judging other people when he's granting them a pardon. He's not acting as a judge. No one considers him a judge in that capacity. So the question is why would he be a judge for the sole purpose of giving himself a pardon. As for the point about no man being above the law, I too agree with that. I believe the president can be prosecuted while in office or afterwards. And so there is a tension between this idea that the president can prosecute himself, but also pardon himself, but as Brian points out that tension is there without respect to the self pardon possibly. That is to say, we can say on the one hand that no man is above the law, but also understand that the president has a pardon that can absolve someone of their crimes. Trump is stress testing a 250-year-old constitution that was never designed for Trump with the total backing of the republican party. The division of powers was supposed to prevent the worst excesses and if the republicans in the senate had convicted him of either selling out to Russia, or trying to overthrow the government, they would not be in this position. They figured on the likes of Trump, but not Mitch McConnell and the current crop of republicans. Cult over country for the white trash base and they follow them down, they no longer lead them.

It's what happens when you only have two political parties and one of them drives out the good people with hearts and brains while replacing them with bigots, lunatics and assholes.

There were norms that were in place. those were ignored with the backing of the GOP. As with up being down, it is the Republicans that are destroying the country, not the Democrats.

He might get them to.

I'm not sure a state will gaol a former President who is running for prez.
If he wins he will have to rule the country and the "free world" from a cell.
Which would be very amusing.

Id suggest its the citizens having a say in how the country is.
Its a democracy- albeit a strange Republic one.
Its Americans who elect the party to rule.
Republican or Democrat parties wouldn't exist if the citizens didn't vote for them.

It will be the White house versus the big house, if he isn't disqualified under the 14th and that looks pretty much like a sure thing, at least for the general election. He should be in a cell by election day and have a freshly minted federal prison number, but if he manages to squirm out of that, he is facing state crimes that will imprison him for life. Equality under the law will be his downfall, he was lazy, stupid and sloppy, which will help to put him and others away.

Its going to be interesting. They don't call him Teflon Don for no reason.

Makes you wonder what the next couple of loonies will be Americas Two choices of Pres election after next.

This saga will go on for years, they will be busting, trying and convicting republicans well into the 2026 election cycle. One rat will lead to another, when they make a deal with Jack, they have to come clean about everything, including crimes by others that they have knowledge of. They know about a dozen republican congress people and senators who requested pardons and Mark Meadows knows more. You don't need a pardon if you never committed a crime and after Jack does Donald, there will be more threads to pull on. Mark needs a deal badly and knows where all the bodies are buried, he was conspiracy central, Trump's prick and brain all rolled into one.

Just catch the low points, there are no high ones or useful ideas or policies. Trump leads them by a mile, it is a party of miscreants, white trash from all income levels, seduced by a psychopathic moron and no matter what happens 30% of the republican base is at his command, disqualified or not. He should be going down in court right in the middle of the GOP primaries this spring and his hold over the base will soon be all he has left. Write Trump in, or yer a RINO I think, he needs to prove he's too big to disqualify or jail! If they disqualify him from the GOP primary, he will attack the nominee and demand a pardon! Donald will haunt America and the GOP until disqualified, convicted and caged, but the shit stain of his base will remain for a long time.
