is it the temperature at the canopy, under the lights, that needs to be around 72 or is that the ambient room temperature?

Neither.

Plants can take up to 95 with co2. Unless it's winter, or your running shit lights, it's going to be near impossible to keep at 72.

WATER, in a hydro system, needs to stay around 70 - soil shouldn't get too warm either, but it doesn't seem to matter as much.

Your canopy temps need to be between 74-78 if you do not have Co2 and 82-86 with Co2. Those are the optimal ranges. Night time temps can drop 10 degrees. Anything outside of those temps and your plants aren't processing light and food at optimal levels. Sure, you can be outside of those ranges and still get good growth but why not aim for perfection if you can.

If you are running hydro then keep your reservoir between 62-68 degrees if you can. Not only do plants uptake nutrients better at these levels; the colder water will help to prevent algae and slime buildup in your reservoir and/or on your tables.

how do you measure canopy temps? do you hang the temperature monitor to where the canopy is? i always thought that you were suppose to keep the monitor from the lights. i have mine on the floor right next to the pot.. i been placing it at the wrong spot huh?

That's why you see all the digital thermometer/hygrometers have probes on them. So you can hang it by your canopy. If you don't have a probe put it on the rim of your pots and when your plants start getting tall check the temps by holding it at canopy level every once and a while. Your plants need to be at 78 degrees. Not the floor or the wall.

Thank you very much for all the answers...went to walmart bought two thermostats, one wireless for temps only (wireless device hanging at canopy level) and one to stay in the room to tell me temps and humidity... Seems I am running 82 at the hottest under the canopy and room stays 70-77.... Lights are vented and have fans running...might have to save up and buy a portable AC.

ddigital thermometers are terrible. they are never accurate. if your thermometer is off by +/-5 degrees than what good is it?
