imlooking to pick up my first guitar. Looking for one with a metal look and sound. Got around £500/$800.

Don't mind second hand or new.

I have seen these but not sure. It's so hard to know what to get. One hand reviews are positive but on forums people slag these companies off. I'm unsure if they are rubbish or the people are used to better guitars.

Depends on your definition of metal look and sound. Alot of newer bands are using 7 string guitars and they are pricey.
Im going to assume u want an electric guitar ?

I had a ESP ltd ec-400 that thing sounded fuckin beautiful(metal as fuck)Better than my buddy's Gibson SG, when I buy another guitar it will defiantly be a esp

I see you like the V style guitars. Keep in mind that if you intend to practice with one while sitting, you'll have to take a classical posture.

I'd stay away from BC Rich and urge you towards the ESP or Jackson brand guitars. I've owned guitars from all those brands you've listed. My Jackson is the only one still around.

If you can get away from the sharp pointy designs, try to find a used Jackson Soloist, neck thru body. You have the budget to make it happen if you can find a fair deal.

You could build one out of a cheap used one. I built one for a friend of mine out of a used Dean guitar, I'm not sure what it was but it was like a step above a starter. I installed some used passive EMG's in it along with a solderless wiring harness and some extra stuff. Put about $200 into the whole thing and it sounds better than his other guitars.

Speaking of guitars... My bass sounds really quiet coming out of the amp, all the knobs work, tone and volume work on both pickups and it has a new wiring harness, pots etc. Are my pickups bad? I know I've got everything hooked up right, this is the 4th solderless wiring harness I've installed so far. The two guitars and another bass I've done worked fine.

I think they are cool looking but its tough to argue any of the choices mentioned. I too would stay away from v's and unusual shapes

I find going into the store or wherever and actually playing them is the best way to decide. Which I suppose is useless advice if you don't actually know how to play. Could bring someone who does know a thing or two though. Can't just go by looks and price, there is the sound and feel, and no two guitars are ever exactly the same, another reason you can't trust the online reviews.

@leftyguitar, your professional advice is needed!

Hard to go wrong with a jackson if you have that amount to spend,
I found mine used for dirt cheap, plays and sounds legit.

I have an esp ltd viper 401fm its all black, perfect action for sweeps etc, has emgs, new in that price range, its a great guitar, esp all the way.

Yes. It's very quiet like I thought it might be something to do with the electronics in it or something but I installed all new pots and a wiring harness. The only thing I reused were the pickups. That's the main reason I bought the bass was for the pickups because the body is pretty beat up I got it for $80. It's a Spector Legend Classic 4, they retail around $600-$800 new.

Thanks for the advice, I'd really prefer a v shape but could be tempted with a non v shape too. I just really love the look of the v shape.

Esp seems the way to go.

If it's your first guitar, get one that you'll play. It should be easy to play with comfortable action and light strings.
don't get a flying V as a first guitar. You can't play it seated. You'll sit more than stand when playing at home and practicing.
Buy the absolute best guitar you can afford to buy. If you stop playing, you can sell it.
Electrics are easier to play. But you'll ned an amp and plug in often.
A good acoustic will make you a better guitar player. Look on eBay. Buy a good brand, Taylor, Martin. Taylor might be the best for a new player.
Take lessons weekly. Should cost $40 a pop from a good local guy.
And remember, it's called PLAYing guitar. Have fun. Be child like. Smile when you do it. There are no wrong notes. And if you think you played a wrong note, move your finger one fret in either direction and it will be right.
If you want me to post links of eBay guitars in your price range I'll be happy to do it.

Thanks for yours and others input. My main use of the guitar is for rocksmith and see if I enjoy it from there. A old friend of mine does lessons so could talk to him at a later date.

Links would be nice too, it's tough not knowing what to get. I see this one and I'm like oh oh oh I want it, 10 mins later oh oh oh I want that. 24hrs later I don't want either of them cos I like too many. Seen a esp ltd delux ec 1000 that looks nice. A bit far away from me but I'm in no rush and one will come up soon. There is so much choice and real right or wrong answers.

Also where I live there isn't any good guitar shops. There all pretty small shops and only stock a limited amount of guitars. I like the idea of going and seeing which one I'd like in person.

If you really want a V, then get one. You can play them in a sitting position just fine.

Acoustics will build up your finger strength faster but if you have no interest in playing acoustic songs then you won't enjoy learning to play on one.

I personally think buying the most expensive guitar you can afford is horrible advice.

Give the Jackson King V line a look, they have multiple models within your price range and still have money left for an amp and lessons.
