Ok, so someone school me a bit. . ...

Very very generally speaking, the land currently being warred over, was seized by Israel at some point (from Egypt?). So, is Hamas like, an "uprising" or "revolution" of sorts??

I mean, are they the " good guys" here??? ---separate the fact that they just killed a bunch of civilians for a split second (we the US are no saints in regards to this). Are they just trying to reclaim land that was originally theirs----or, Egypt's?

Just curious as to others' thoughts that are more educated as to what's happening and why

They are allied, supported and directed by Iran who are taking advantage of injustices and the rage of Palestinians to attack Israel. Having a festival and party on the beach next to what is essentially a concentration camp and ghetto, kinda has a rub your nose in it feel, doesn't it? Because they are aligned with Iran and Iran is Russia's ally, it makes it hard for those magat Russia supporters, doesn't it? I mean support Russia in the Ukrainian war and you are supporting an ally of Israel's mortal enemy. Do you think defeating Russia and breaking their military power in Ukraine will leave Iran more or less exposed? I can see Israel supporting Ukraine with more arms and weapons systems over this, the enemy of my enemy is my friend. There are a lot of Russian Jews in Israel however and they are soft on Russia in many cases. However, Hamas being supported by Iran, a Russian ally makes life hard for them too. I would expect Biden to exploit this Hamas, Iran, Russia relationship and alliance to help with support for Ukrainian aid.

Already have a thread on the war, easily could have put the question there.

Good guys in the ME? What day is it today?

The Palestinians and Jewish people laid claim to the same land (England promised it to both of them in the early half of the 1900's). They almost made piece with each other (was it Clinton, I can not remember) but the Palestinian negotiators backed out. Since then Israel have been taking over land that was suppose to be for the Palestinians (the UN had a two state solution in mind). Both sides have done tit-for-tat assaults on each other when either the settlers/government (who are on Palestinian land) or the militants act up. The Gaza Strip had elections and voted in Hamas, more voting the previous bunch out though from what I remember. Hamas ideology has "Death to Israel" as their guiding light. On the other hand, the West Bank is ruled by Fatah, who wanted to make a deal with Israel and get on with life. Because Gaza's government was set to destroy Israel, Israel blockaded the area to protect itself from possible threats. Iran wants to see Israel wiped off the make and has been sneaking in arms for years and sends money as well.

That depends on how you feel about Jews as has been evident in these recent and older threads. Basically, if you believe Jews are evil and deserve everything they have to endure, have no problem with their women and children being kidnapped and dragged across the border by terrorists (something any sane person would not excuse under any circumstances), then yeah, great guys.

I definitely don't believe that, of anyone

Are you implying that Israel is completely blameless in all this? What is being offered to the Israeli population now is a Hegelian Dialect, the result of a massive security failure. Whose brain fart was it to have a music festival next to the Gaza strip? I'm sure Hamas saw the ads for it and thought it would be a perfect terrorism target. Israelis living the good life and partying next door must have been a tempting target for Hamas. I'll say it again, no justice, no peace, Israel stole the west bank from the Palestinians and Jordan, who set it aside for them. You are ignoring the rise of the right in Israel and the radical settlers and religious fanatics that are now controlling the government and pushed the theft of the west bank along with a map of ancient Israel. The same kind of discrimination and suppression that the Jews themselves suffered from in Europe, they are inflicting on others whom they consider inferior and "other". Gaza is just a modern version of the Warsaw Ghetto, lucky enough to be supported by Arab oil money donations.

I don't condone terrorism, but it is the nature of asymmetrical warfare and not without provocation. There are many kinds of terrorism and occupation is one of them and the victims include women and children along with many abuses on a daily basis. Israel won the war but failed miserably at the peace and must bear the burden of that failure. The Palestinians made bad choices from day 1 and Yasser was an idiot who led his people to their doom with a wave of international terrorism and hijackings that affect attitudes in the west to this day. HAMAS is the tool of Iran, who support and help run it and Iran is an ally of Russia, I figure Ukraine will be the principal beneficiary.

If you are concerned about terrorism and civilian deaths, wait until the Israeli airforce flattens Gaza, then you will see plenty of innocent women and children dead. I dunno what Bebe will do, but it will also involve a strike(s) on Iran, who were behind this attack.

ok that's a wow.....
There is too much ambiguity in this conflict for me to have strong feelings for either side, mostly I ignore it, as do many, it has been going on forever. This is the latest episode, but it won't be the last, we await Israel's retaliation on the people of Gaza, innocent and guilty alike. Iran's part in all this won't be forgotten either, or the attempt to frame Ukraine by Russia for the actions of their allies.

I'm no fan of war or terrorism, but the war in Ukraine is clearly a righteous struggle against an imperialist power. In the middle east you have a much more complex situation, but simple in the final analysis, both sides want the same land. The Uk started all this mess in the early 20th century, and it is that legacy of British control and the war in Europe that led to this situation and the beginning of Israel in late 1940s. It is also the result of many attacks and wars by more numerous foes who were allied with the Palestinians and the rise of the religious right and intolerance in Israel. There has been so much conflict there and much of it is unreported, my nephew served as a UN peacekeeper there and told tales of daily conflict unreported by the media. Personally, I have given up caring and I see the injustices perpetrated by the Israelis on the Palestinians as fueling their grievances and countries like Iran taking advantage of that resentment. How did America and the western allies win the peace in Japan and Germany? How did the Russians lose it? Terrorism is asymmetrical warfare and if America were invaded like Ukraine Americans would be suicide bombers too, except for the magats who would be informants for the enemy.

It will result in driving Israel to supporting Ukraine, something it was reluctant to do because of the tight political situation in the country and the large numbers of Russian Jews who emigrated there over decades. Hamas is the instrument of Iran, and they are the ally of Russia, Israel will strike Iran over this, count on it. Hopefully they learned the PR lessons from Ukraine and will be restrained in their attack on Gaza with the world watching, atrocities will make support dry up and Israel's behavior towards the Palestinians has eroded international support now that they are militarily strong and secure. Bebe had better not preside over a massacre of civilians in Gaza or he will have trouble from liberal democracies and the UN, just as the Russians did.

Hamas has developed a vast arsenal in blockaded Gaza
Published 12:36 PM CDT, March 25, 2019

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — A rocket fired from the Gaza Strip on Monday was one of the most powerful launched ever by Gaza militants, flying nearly 120 kilometers (70 miles) before it slammed into a house in central Israel, wounding seven people.
Over more than a decade, the Islamic militant Hamas group has built up a large arsenal of rockets and missiles. It started with crude short-range projectiles and now possesses rockets that can strike virtually anywhere in Israel.
Hamas seized control of Gaza in 2007, prompting Israel and Egypt to impose a blockade on the territory, largely to prevent the militants from amassing more weapons. But the blockade and three wars with Israel — the most recent in 2014 — failed to prevent Hamas from expanding its arsenal.

A network of smuggling tunnels along the Egyptian border is believed to have helped Hamas bring in advanced weapons and raw materials, though Egypt shuttered most of the tunnels around 2013.
In 2018, Gaza’s Hamas chief Yehiya Sinwar boasted that the group had not only replenished the rockets it fired during the 50-day war in 2014, but had many more at its disposal. He said that what had been fired in 50 days “would be fired within five minutes” of any future Israeli offensive.

Monday’s rocket strike was the furthest a Gaza rocket has landed since 2014, when Hamas struck the northern Israeli city of Haifa, about 150 kilometers (90 miles) away.
Hamas doesn’t release details about its military capabilities.
Gabi Siboni, an Israeli military analyst, said Hamas “has a variety of advanced, precise, and effective weaponry.” He said this includes guided anti-tank missiles and shoulder-launched anti-aircraft missiles, both produced by Russia, as well as some drones.

ROCKETS
—Qassams: In 2001, a year after the outbreak of the second Palestinian uprising against Israel, Hamas first fired a cross-border rocket toward Israel, calling it “Qassam” after the group’s military wing. The homemade rockets, aimed at Israeli border towns, had an irregular trajectory and sometimes landed inside Gaza.
—R-160: Hamas calls this its longest-range home-grown rocket. It was first fired in the 2014 war and at one point hit Haifa. The “R’’ in the name refers to Abdel-Aziz Rantissi, a senior Hamas official who was killed in an Israeli airstrike in 2004. The number refers to the range, in kilometers.
—J-80: This rocket, also produced locally, is named after Hamas military wing commander Ahmed Jabari, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike on his car in 2012, setting off an eight-day war. Israel reportedly believes the rocket that hit central Israel on Monday was this model and blamed Hamas. The group has not claimed responsibility.
—M-75: Hamas unveiled this rocket in 2014, claiming it was homemade. But experts believe it is a version of the Iranian Fajr 5 rocket, which Iran acquired in the 1990s and is based on Chinese technology.

—Hamas also possess a variety of Russian Grad rockets. These projectiles, with a range of about 20 kilometers (12 miles), are believed to have been delivered via Iran.

TUNNELS
In recent years, Hamas has built a sophisticated network of tunnels. These include attack tunnels that run under the Gaza-Israel perimeter fence, for use by assailants to infiltrate Israel. Defensive tunnels, located away from the border, are used to store weapons and serve as hideouts.
Hamas first used tunnels in a 2006 cross-border attack in which it killed two Israeli soldiers and captured a third. The soldier, Gilad Shalit, was swapped for more than 1,000 prisoners in 2011.

Hamas also used the tunnels in the 2014 war, killing five soldiers in one cross-border raid.
During the fighting, Israel said it discovered and destroyed 32 tunnels. Since then, it says it has discovered and destroyed several additional tunnels.
To combat the tunnel threat, Israel has begun building an underground barrier running the length of the Gaza Strip, and this year it said it was reinforcing the Gaza fence with 20-foot-high galvanized steel.

IMPORTED WEAPONS
—Mortars. Hamas has fired hundreds of mortars at short-range targets just across the border. The mortars are believed to have been smuggled from Libya through Egypt.
— Laser-guided anti-tank missiles made by Russia. Last November, Hamas fired such a missile, known as Kornet, at a bus from which Israeli soldiers had just exited. One soldier was seriously wounded. In a 2006 war, the Lebanese Hezbollah militia killed dozens of Israeli tank soldiers using these weapons.
—Drones: Hamas has developed an early-stage drone program, displaying images of Israeli fields purportedly filmed by these aircraft. It’s not known whether they have been used for attacks.

I am sure Hamas has had this weekend in mind way before the Ukraine war. I recall reading years ago that they had 100,000 rockets stored up.

I hope Israel wipes those bastards off the map and right quick.

As soon as Iran got that 6 billion unfrozen they immediately financed the attack.

This war has been ongoing for a thousand years..so sad everyone can't just get a bong.

I'm not right nor left. I live in the middle of nowhere enjoying the American Dream.

It just makes me sad to see innocent people's lives ruined of others beliefs. Hence the why can't we all get a bong comment. We are all human and humans should be able to live their lives without being killed for their beliefs.

So Iran released the prisoners before they got the money? Doesn't seem like they would do that does it?

There have been many reports of Russian and Iranian involvement.

Hypocrisy. Palestinians conntinue to be non-lived by the hands/weapons of Zionist settlers and soldiers who continue an illegal occupation of Palestinian land.

Just to clarify by bastards I meant the actual attacking individuals. Not the Palestinians in general. Not to sound like a Miss America contestant but, seriously, all I want is world peace.
