has anyone ever topped side branches?

Has anyone ever topped a side branch? What is the effect? Are you even supposed to top outdoors?

I took a couple of clones - the branches right at the bottom, and they HAVE actually grown some tiny buds (they wouldn't have grown them at the point they have if I hadn't cloned...)
