always use a professionally mixed nutrient formula, regardless of media chosen. I have grown in sand successfully, but as stated above, it dries quickly. I ran a drip feed and it worked very well on 52 plant to maturity. pests do not tolerate it, temps are consistant, buildup rinses easily. It is very heavy, dry and wet, and does not offer very sturdy plant support, compared to hydroton.

One of the organic growers was talking about running something similar to flood and drain, but with fish aquarium as the res and the plants sitting in gravel. Just an idea

ahhhh....pea gravel ! old days, but used it for years.. hydroton has been my mainstay for three years. recenty tried the big chunk perlite..i want to like it, but its way to light and offers little support, and requires extra feeding, as it dries quickly too. now I put the perlite on top of the hydroton....probably to justify the expense of a couple hundred pounds of perlite to use !!
