Has Anyone Ever Trimmed The Roots Of Mother Plants In DWC Or Aero?

That sounds about right. You should document the process for others on here, or at least share some pix before and after.

Ive cut the root system of my plants lots of times doingsome dodgy re-poting haha they were in shock just and took a bit longer than the others to recover thou it wouldent be advisable if not needed

I grow in DWC as well. I trim the roots to increase root mass. Trimming roots does the same thing as trimming the canopy. As the roots drop from my cup i try to trim them so they are uniform in length- You might think they would shock but they love it. After the first couple weeks i stop trimming and let them grow out more. This technique is proven by the gardening techniques of tree farmers and others. Often they will plant trees in shallow pots with netting below the dirt so the roots grow through and die...promoting a more profuse root ball. Some pots have acidic walls so when the roots touch them they die....this is for a reason. Try it out! THe best time to trim is the first couple weeks when just the first little roots are popping through. Trimming them off every day for a week the roots will increase tenfold.

Cutting the roots is always a bad idea as it slows the plant and adds massive shock to the plant. You will losse time and yiled on the plants

Filthy, the trimming is for strictly mother plants. Im not trying to increase yield. Yo Filthy by the way do you have a pic of the mother buckets that you make. What gallon size do you use? Let me know. :peace:

im growing 3 mothers in a gh dwc hydro unit and will probably be doing some trimming at some point. ive been able to get around 8 to 12 clones off my 3plant unit per week without any major slowdown and im only using about 25% nutes
ive added a little shot of clonex in my mix lately to help the rooting of the new clones.....we shall see if it helps
this thing grows like crazy and its only under normal floros
just got 2 t5 light systems 2foot long and a wopping 110 watts each fixture
cant wait to see the new growth

I chop the roots of my plants any time they get too long and find their way to the reservoir.. it's fine.. Its true it slows the plants growth slightly and it takes a few days to a week for the plant to adjust its energy balance... cut too much of the root system and the plant has to start sacrificing branches/leaves in order to keep the balance.. its all pretty simple (just think of the separation layer of what is under the ground versus what is above ground as a mirror image of an energy system).. chop too much off in relation to how much plant is above ground and the whole thing will die (just use common sense).. in my setup, I dont want the plants to get too tall, yet I dont want to top the plant thereby sacrificing the most potent part (potential cola), so instead I chop some of the roots down.. as long as you try to keep from chopping more than about 15% of the root system at a time, the plant will recover and be fine.. its better than letting the plant get root bound or having the roots sitting in stagnant water (reservoir).. all these people who think cutting roots is taboo prob just never tried it .. its fine just use common sense (like everything else in this world).. good luck!

i had to cut back some roots and did not notice any signifigant stress or damage. theese types of systems promote incredible root growth, it would take a lot of stress to slow them down.

Im sure it would be fine then for the moms that you clone from but not plants in flowering. I understand were your coming from because i had a 3 gallon dwc and a 5 gallon dwc and the roots for my moms just got bigger and bigger till they root bounded from hell and back..

Okay, I am gonna jump in here. I found this thread because I was wondering the same question. I am using a recirculating drip system in 5 gallon buckets, I have a Very large SleeSkunk that keeps clogging the bucket. It is around 4ft at 30days from seed and has a massive root system. If anyone has ever watched that how to video about cannibis(not Jorges), they mention how he had to trim the roots, but came up with a second bucket approach to curb this problem, but doesn't go into how to trim the roots. I was wondering if I should trim them, they keep clogging the drain tube. I don't mind stunting the growth, since obviously it is going to be a 6ft plant anyways, considering 4ft and still is gettin vegged for another 20 days until my amnesia auto finishes. I am sure there will be plenty of yeild on that large of plant, but am curious on anyone elses thoughts.
