Has anyone gone full DIY and buy all diodes and connect them together?

Just wondering on what scale the DIY goes to around here - sounds like most common is just to buy prebuilt LEDs (boards/sets) and mount them together. Has anyone gone all out and bought each individual diode to connect? Wonder how much work/savings that resulted in

unless you have access to 10000 pc pricing from chip manufacturers and your time is worth less than the average assembly line worker there is no reason to do that
right yeah, it looks signifcantly cheaper but connecting thousands of diodes = o_o

I did a way long time ago with star led's. It took me a couple days to tin all the wires and connect it all. Literally 8 hours in a sitting. I still have that first board I made. Plain old epistar led's but I think it was more about the fun of the build. I think there were 4 circuits of 25 to 32 stars.
