Take a good look at that vinyard video. If the farmers have these, imagine what the police have!

Some people need a lesson in Botany. Marijuana DOES NOT give off a "heat signature"....People that use 1000 watt HPS and/or 1000 Watt MH are the ones that can get caught. Hell yeah the cops have equipment that can detect if you are running such crazy ass bulbs in your home, but to say that marijuana can be found from a "heat signature" outside is just plain ignorant.
this is something i found on many grow sites without much argument against it
looks like one of the bigger MJ Internet myths out there
but there has been some serious research to try to use it, as best as i can tell, it looks to be mostly worthless

Seems like every year I see the copters, and you can tell them when you see them, tree top high, the side door open, not a pleasant site, although last year I didnt see one, maybe due to the goverment cuts, hopefully the same this year. I flew in a copter from San Diego to San Francisco back in the late 70s, and I could not believe how much you can see from the air.........the pilot flew pretty low and we were able to open the side door on the huey and as far as spotting a pot plant it would stand out like a sore thumb. I think the main thing is blending in, do not plant out in the open, pine trees stay green all year long , you may have to deal with the acid soil, but I have found they are some good cover.

Mj when flowering has the highest uv protection than any other plant in the kingdom. It can reflect light that can be seen from a chopper.

same deal where i am in NY, 2009 was helicopters over my house every day in late september/early october
2010 - not a peep(or rumble actually) - money, i suspect, is finally denting some government activity

Thats a horrible feeling when you see the copters buzzing around, sure makes your ass hole punker......
in this case, it was mostly annoying, loud obnoxious helicopters disturbing the peace
and this was by far the most coper activity i had ever seen, result?
i didn't read or hear of single plant being found, maybe there were a few, but nothing that was news worthy
so you have is some yahoos with free federal drug task force money that get to ride over the countryside like drug task force rambos
not to wish death on them(which many do here), but a very firm hard landing in one of those copters might have them rethink how much fun it is

I agree with you on this ,

in that vid i posted ,

the camera they were using was picking up the heat from the hid`s

you could tell by the shape of it also , it looked like a bright ass fucking bulb

alot of them looked like they were upstairs or in attics

i wounder if you had basement and grew underneath your house , how good would that camera see the heat

hell probably just same , idk

but i believe they can only penetrate through walls so far deep , imo anyway

i wonder what type of material you would have to use to camouflage the heat that the hid`s put out

Now as far as outdoors go , idk how they do it

so does that flir camera you all are talking about make it easier to find it outside

,

i think i need to go back a read the other post again lol

I already posted this in one thread but here it is again,
Actually its due mostly to piss poor grower habits. Technology plays a very small role in busting outdoor grows. Follow these simple tips and reduce the chances of getting busted...

1. Dont plant in highly traveled areas
2. Dont use the same path time and time again
3. Dont Leave your trash behind
4. Dont cut down trees, find a spot that is already suitable
5. Dont plant in rows or any kind of pattern

common sense is the grower's biggest friend, as nicely summarized here
the path can be a bit of a bitch, it's hard not to leave one, especially if you get lazy - easy to do on long walks
so here's few tips i've read(there is a silverback thread on another site that is great reading)
one tip is to create a path with a fork in it(if you must leave a path), people are generally more reluctant to follow a split path because of the fear of getting lost
another trick is visual distraction, say like an animal skull in a tree(or maybe a dollar bill), these tend to focus attention else where

Heres the truth. Cannabis retain's alot of water in the leaves (some reaching 12' dia.), when that water is heats up, it gives off a heat, and a larger more visable heat signature than alot of indigenous plants. the plants out there have very deep tap roots and struggle to get water. They emmit smaller signatures than a plant taken care of 2-3times a week. ALSO, the roots from surrounding plants are sucking up your water, so then you create spots of heated water, which are highly visible in Infared. This is a bust....but if you keep it small and spread out, you should be ok.
Stick to the idea of stealth, stay away from hiking trails etc. Dont do anything out of the norm, like cutting trees and making paterns, as before posted.
Remember that if you get to gready, you will get caught. also dont think this shit is easy its NOT. You think you are just gonna stroll in and grow weed in the wild on someone elses land, than you are sorely mistaken. It hard ass painstaking work, believe you me.
be smart and get ready for a hard part time stressful job..YEE-HAW! Git-R-Done

Don't know if anyone answered the question with all the chopper talk. I'd say it depends on the natural veg in your area. Lots of different types of shrubs and trees can hide up to 30 plants to a plot and less varied vegetation can do maybe 5. It depends on how much you ultimately want to grow with plots spread at least a mile? Like was stated before i believe most busts via the air nationwide are probably detected by sight. Just keep it natural looking and go with your gut.

at one time, cops were allowed to use flir (the heat detector) to bust indoor grows... but today, im almost positive they are not allowed to do so in the united states without a warrant...
This is the correct answer. For outdoors just spread your plant's at least 20 yard's apart and veg them out big so you get a substantial harvest. This way if one get's cut the ripper's or police may not find the other ones. It is good to do 10 plant's in one mile area than go 15 miles away and do another area.

Here in Cali the helicopters use 'flir' to look for the coolness of the watered dirt.

Dry dirt is hot, but watered plants have cool dirt. They are looking at the heat of the dirt not the plants. They fly around at night and look for the "blue" spots.

Now this I can believe.

This is how they use FLIR to find outdoor grows.
They aren't looking at the plants. It's the dirt!

Sigh....Dude, you are wrong. MJ is no different than anyother plant. It's roots search for water like any other plant. They have leaves with a stoma which is usually open during the day for gas exchange and expiration of water to help during photosynthesis/ATP via osmatic pressure. Understand that MJ has a vacular system/cambien(xylem and pholem) like most plants and trees. Pholem moves nutrients and xylem moves water. Sure the stoma closes at night, but it closing is not different than how any other tree or plant closes it's stoma. Thus, it retains and expires water like any other surrounding plant or tree so how can it be detected? Some of you act as if MJ is some mystical plant that grows "different" or has special qualities when growing. The only thing different that MJ does is produce THC and such.

As for the detecting wet soil....If you believe that then I have a brigde in San Fran that I will sell you. The best time to water your plants is in the MORNING anyway. This gives them all day to use that water up and the heat from then sun will heat the soil up which helps the water dry up. Not to mention the plant will use the water up anyway via opening of the stoma and photosynthesis. Watering at night does almost nothing for the plant because the stoma is closed. And for those that foliar water their plant......DON'T MJ DOES NOT soak up water in it's leaves. It gets ALL of it's water from the soil via the roots. Spraying your plant leaves with water is a waste of time. Come on people. I know we all like to bake, but use some common sense here. The science to this is so simple.

Dude...when there are blotches of wet soil here and there it is hard to tell. That is a vineyard farm with LOADS of grapes...The patterns are what give that place away. A blotch here and there will go undetected. In a real forest that technology is completly useless.

Out in the wilds where gorilla grows happen, there aren't any other wet spots. Nobody is watering the forest, only the pot plants!

God luck man
