Put a layer of sand about 1" thick on top of your soil...enough to cover it completely. You can also get some neem oil/concentrate and water it into the soil.

But the real trick for getting rid of ants is POWDERED CINNAMON. Apply a little of this to the top of your soil before the sand and water it in...for some reason, ants HATE cinnamon. I have done this and can tell you it had no adverse effects on my plants. Let me know if you try it and how it works for you!

One half cup icing sugar, half a cup of borax (find it in the laundry isle), mix the two thoroughly together and put it near your plants but not on the soil etc.

I get ants every year at the same time - and if I don't nip it in the bud it can get way out of control in a real hurry and this always works for me.

You can get bagged sand at home depot or lowes in the gardening section. I always get Moser Lee Desert Sand for like $3.

I don't know about putting Borax near my plants, but the cinnamon works every time and lasts for the entire grow (as some of the residual cinnamon will stay on top of the soil, keeping ants away for the entire life of the plant).
