Ok so I have been thinking this through for a while and I am stuck so I am hoping someone can shed some light on this for me or help me figure out what terms to search google for.

Basically, I have a hydro system and want to create a back-up reservoir that will keep the primary res full. I want to do this with as few moving/electrical parts as possible. The problem I have is that if the back-up res is raised higher than the primary then it will fill beyond the max I want. If they are dead even then I am only going to have a tiny bit of water for backup. I think there must be a way by either adjusting the tubing to rise higher or something but I just can't figure it out right now. ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED!

Most guys use some kind of float switch. Think of another reservoir that you use every day. Yep, the toilet. It's got a manual float switch.

I made one once from an electric switch, and I connected a metal tube with a cork on the end to be the float.

If you just want to use gravity, then you'll have to adjust the height of each res.

HTH
