Help installing Ubuntu.

:cuss: For some reason, I get to the menu screen(I am running an alternate cd) and click the 'Check CD for defects' option and it gives me a text box saying "Error from boot CD" or something to the effect of that, then gives me the only option of rebooting. So then I try installing it, and it says the same thing. Is it something wrong with the 8.10 I downloaded or my computer?

i haven't done any linux installs in a while, but i installed breezy badger on my laptop from back in the day and had no problems. i'm thinking it's probably an issue with the disk or download.

sounds like a bad burn there is nothing wrong with your computer try burning it again happens quite often maybe try a slower burning speed

Burn the image at a slower speed and try it again. If it's still a "no go", let me know and I'll try to help. I've been running Linux for years and have installed Linux innumerable times. Post the hardware specs on your machine too. That'll help.

That's actually what I was thinking of doing. I'll do it and let you know how it goes.

Alright, so I burned xubuntu 8.10(I decided that this would run better) at the slowest speed and installed it. But when I tried to complete the installation, it would be fine. And then it would take me to the desktop but I couldn't click anything, and the icons and the background were scrambled across the screen. And then it would freeze up.

I don't know what kind of errors xubuntu would have, considering there is only one mirror to download from in the US.

Should I try Hardy Heron instead?

I have an old gateway by the way, 7 years old. Has a Pentium 4, 256 RAM, and a 75 GB harddrive.

I also tried Wubi, and it said I only had 253 RAM, could this be part of the problem?

i dont think the amount of ram is the problem you could try fedora and just basic ubuntu those are the easiest and have the most support
