I don't use much heat but more time than anything, time at room temp. I found heating and vac smelled up my entire garage with some nice smelling shit.
That lead me to believe I was not only vacuuming solvents of some kind AND some useful shit that could remain IF I didn't vacuum it all out.
Of course heating and vac at the same time is a pain in the ass for me since I bought a expensive plastic dessicator that I can't add heat to while under .
I'm sure there are lots of variables one being the material you use. some material poor enough will remain sap forever I guess.
I realize I'm not answering your question but I'm staying kinda on topic and don't give a fuck anyway.
I'd like to see your setup in a photo if you could. looking to change mine up.
I've let shit set at room temp for 30 days finally to dry out enough to make shatter.

there are several people here that will tell you enough about making concentrates your head will spin so good luck. I'll look in for a tip or two.

I always prefer no heat...lack of waxes helps get you shatter, that's not to say its not possible to get shatter from butane but it would rather absorb waxes that are more like the butane than thc..like dissolves like. Inevitably even with the quickest wash butane will pick up a good portion of waxes.. to have an efficient non polar extract still be shatter it usually must be winterized......which brings me to my next point, starting out with a polar solvent won't prefer to pick up the waxes but will pick up water soluble nasties.. all the compounds in the plant including precursory cannabinoids are polar to move about the plant..so a polar wash is more likely to give you a dirtier product with far less wax. To get an efficient polar shatter it must be quick wash.....

Now then depending on if you used butane or iso or etoh your product consistencies will be different. If you heat your shatter it will boil off lighter "wet" terpenes and leave the heavier terps.. the heavier terps have a higher boiling point therefore more solid at room temp.......so slight heat is OK to help make shatter......

however I will never use heat..........

Pictures are small and you gotta click em but you can clearly see the dry dark waxy oil after heat is nowhere close to the almost orange waxy on ma blade

Your griddle may or may not control low enough for making shatter, without turning it on and off, but we use 115F and -29.5" Hg in a thin film, to get a rapid purge, while retaining the carboxylic acid form and the monoterpenes.

It typically takes 30 minutes or so to purge.

Hey fadedawg, I recently started making bho and still haven't been able to achieve shatter consistency. I have my chamber on a griddle and actually have been able to dial it in at a low temp (usually 105 F) and have been vac purging at -29.5 but it seems to take forever...My last run was in the chamber for 3 full days and still not fully purged ( still bubbling), this isn't right is it??.. Is it because I'm using too much butane??? Also, it seems that if I interrupt the purge process (open the chamber) the the oil will just seize up and stop bubbling (pretty much stop purging) ... I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.. I appreciate any help

Wowza, that is good control for a griddle! What kind is it?

The oil will continue to bubble until it is fully purged and decarboxylated. The trick is to pull it out when the random sized solvent bubbles stop and only the fizzy CO2 bubbles remain.

This is a day and a half into purging and it's starting to wax up in the middle areas.. So Is this over purged??image.jpg

dayumm, this is day one eh?

two days later??

the color took a darker toll :/

yo are only at 105F as well and only 29.5 hg?

freaking colors.

when you take it out of chamber, is it all sticky? taffy like? shatter like?

you can tear off a tiny piece, and try and light it on fire, if tiny sparks come flying out, try more purge. if not. smoke it uppppppppppppppppp

Yea, the pic of it a day and a half in isn't great but it did get a bit darker... Yeah my temp might fluctuate between 100-110 but never goes over 110F and yes I'm at full vac -29.5...
image.jpg I just got home from work and pulled it out of the chamber.. It's not fully shatter, kinda taffy like where the clarity is but it does snap, but why did it also wax up in some spots??? This was in my chamber for 48 hours..It smells great but my goal is stable shatter... I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong

For what it's worth- I have limited expertise but it seems to me through trial & error and it's been mentioned in several threads that the end result of concentrates is strain dependant. Some strains wax up or turn to shatter easier than others. I.E: My cotton candy strain BHO comes out like hard shatter every time whereas my Pineapple Express oil is typically more taffy like & probably could get it to wax up if I had a power vac pump...Either way that shit doesn't look bad; just enjoy it & keep trying. You ll figure it out eventually with the right strain IMO.

Yeah I've read that too.. I guess the consensus on getting shatter from any strain pretty much is to winterize before vac purging, which I guess I'm gonna do for my next run.. Thanks for the help guys! It's much appreciated
