Can you put a clone straight in to 12/12 from the time you cut it or does it need to go under 24 hours of light until it gets roots?

id definately root it first.
I agree i would definately root it.

A clone should remain on the same light cycle that the donor plant was being grown under. So if the donor or mother plant was under 24hours light then clone under 24hours light. If the Donor or mother plant was on 20/4 or 18/6 then use 20/4 or 18/6.

Once rooted you can flower it straight away if you want. Some people do this as a SOG and have a perpetual cycle of small single cola plants.

Yeah you have to put it under light from 18-24 hours to get roots. Also you will need to keep it in dome to get 100 percent humity for 4-6 days.

get a good root structure first so they can draw all the nutrients the plant will need for some dank bud.
