Help needed please!

Hey everyone! I just signed onto here, and have read alot but have many questions also. Ok heres what I have going on. My buddy gave me 4 clones off his plant. They were off the top section of it I believe. There arent any fan leaves. I have them in cups of water, and roots have started to come out of the bottom of them. I have to use CFLs right now because I have limited space until we get a bigger place. The problem is the leaves keep turning brown, but the top of the clone keeps growing, giving it more leaves. What am I doing wrong, if anything? Is it too hot for them, im using a 40 watt daylight cfl. I placed my hand near the top of them, and it isnt warm on my hand at all. Ill take any help anyone wants to offer me!

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I appreciate it. Im finishing up at work and should be home in a couple hours. As far as the leaves, They dont get big enough to get to the normal shape a typical plant does. I apologize, this is new to me.

pics? what kind of leaves are on them if there aren't fan leaves?
Just got home and snapped a couple pics. My buddy told me this would be the best way for them to get roots on a budget. Any tips would be appreciated. Thank you.

First off you need to transplant them so they aren't in clear solo cups. Light on roots is very bad. If they have roots then transplant them into soil - if not, light proof the solo cups so no light gets inside.

Second those clones are from a flowering plant. They will need to re veg which takes time. What is your current light cycle, make sure it's at least 18/6 so they don't try to continue flowering.

Thank you for the reply. I will be getting some solo cups either later tonight, or tomorrow as soon as im done work. I have them on 18/6 like you said. Just cant figure out why they wont grow any other leaves. Its interesting to learn this, but frustrating because I dont really have anyone to ask. Thats why I joined this forum. For light, Im using a "daylight" cfl. I dont have much space at the house we are in at the moment. Ive read, not sure if it is true, that if space is a concern, to use cfls. Not sure if it is true or not. Thank you for the tip on the roots though

Get them ASAP. Also if you aren't putting them in soil then regular solo cups will still let light in, use duct tape if you have nothing else.

Your lighting sounds fine for now until they root then you'll need more.

The plants wont have new growth for a while because for 1 they are trying to root and 2 they are re vegging. After they root you won't see a lot of new growth for a few weeks, sometimes it takes over a month it just depends. As soon as you get roots you need to plant them in soil or your hydro system.

This is all assuming your friend cut the clones correctly and they actually root. Clones from flower sometimes just don't root.

While you're waiting for them to root to do some research and prepare your setup.

Thank you for replying and the help. The smallest one has roots and will plant it as soon as im done typing this. I wasnt going to buy anything crazy. I went with the fox farm ocean forest. And was going to order their nutrients also. Are they pretty good? I read the other thread that the one other new guy on here used them also in the same soil. Should I use the same CFLs for now when I plant them in the soil? Or move the ones I plant into stronger ones?

once those root and stay alive, I would get them I to your soil and not use any nutes for a while. it's pretty hot as it is if I remember correctly. The cfl's should be fine through vegging. as said above, it will probably take a couple weeks to reveg, but as long as it roots and stays alive, you should be fine.

Nice! Thanks again! I just got finished moving things around, and put the one in soil. Its roots were pretty long surprisingly. Will the leaves yellow anymore? Or since it has to get use to the soil, it should be expected alittle right? I didnt add much water to the soil, just barely wet. I was just concearned about the plants being close to the light. The are about 4-5" away, and the ones in water still are further being the cups a little shorter. Im glad that you replied to my thread!! Thank you!

image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg A little update on whats going on. 2 of the 4 didnt make it. But the two that did have been doing ok so far. The ones that lives are in the bottom left of the previous pic, and top right posted earlier in the thread. Ironically the one with the most growth was the smallest when i started. If anyone has any tips, feel free to post. Also, Im going to need nutrients soon, so I was thinking of going with the Fox farm trio. Any thoughts on that would be great also! Have a great day. Its interesting to learn all this!
