welcome to rollitup :D

if you are really interested in growing, the first thing you should do before purchasing grow equipment is read read read. there are tons of threads here on riu that will help you understand the cannabis plant and how it grows, but trial and error is the best way to learn. growing herb is alot like any other plant, they all need food water and light to survive. and a growing medium of course...

growing medium - soil or hydroponics, for beginners i suggest organic soil or a seed starter mix. that way you know exactly what nutrients your plant is getting, and you don't have to feed small seedlings for the first 2-3 weeks.

food - fertilizer comes in lots of brands, i also suggest 100% organic fertilizer. organic is best for beginners because chemicals can burn your plants if you aren't careful. just follow the feeding instructions on the back of the bottle.

light - sunlight is always better than artificial light, but not everyone can grow outdoors. light is the most important part of growing any plant. without enough light the plant will produce small flowers or even worse, wilt and die. Most indoor growers use Metal Halide (MH) lamps in the vegitative/growth stage of a plant and High Pressure Sodium (HPS) lamps are best for the flowering stage. You can use 1 or the other, or if you are on a budget you can also use CFL/florescent bulbs, but if you are on a budget I suggest not growing weed lol.

water - a steady watering schedule is just as important as light when it comes to a plant's survival. under-watering a plant will cause it to dry up and wilt, and over-watering can cause it to droop and rot the roots. when growing in soil, just give them enough water so that it drains out of the bottom of the pots, and only water every few days after it has evaporated and the soil is completely dry.

this is just a very basic rundown of what a plant needs to grow, but there is alot more to take in account like temperature and humidity and pH levels. that's where the reading comes in handy :) good luck

nice summary of the essentials there by majek : be sure to read and process that text as it will help you throughout your grow. Welcome to the forum, and best wishes on harvest :)

If I were you I'd read people's grow journals. They really give you a good idea of the steps.
Learning from your mistakes is true, but sometimes the mistakes have been made for you by other people and you can read about it in RIU haha

Welcome to RIU man,
When i first joined i was told one thing... Growing marijuana isn't ever a cheap hobby... I had the same plan as you.. one or two small plants, £50 budget (Est. $80) to get as much stuff as possible... I ended up spending £150 on growlights alone (400w HPS & 125w Blue Spectrum CFL) and im lucky enough to have raw materials available, i got free fans, vents, growbox, timer and a homemade hanger...

Sorry to break it to you mate but no matter how hard you try, if you grow inside the costs will creep up...
Peace

ah its cool man i got a £100 budget atm... but ma birthday is in jan (lucky me :D) so i could put more money into it maybe another £100, im only doin this cz i prefer smokin then gettin wasted on booze and im treatin ma self for my 18 :P would u have any tips on what to get then for around £200?

Peace

to be honest u can do a lotta things on the cheap like get fans from people and wood to build a box( in ur loft) or convert an old wardrobe. every gardener has old pot lieing around( clean them thoroughly!!!!). maybe a few extension cable and a timer to turn your lights on is cheap. all that stuff is cheap, but u should never skimp on ur lights, they are THE single most important item. watering cans as well can be picked up cheap and a cheapo thermometer from b & q( ur in the uk, right?). after that its the nutes, again u can go cheap by getting tomato plant stuff but for £20 u can get the real deal( i use biobizz products; bio grow(for vegging stage) and biobloom( for flowering), its around a tenner per litre bottle. thers a product called 'mylar' used to line the inside of ur grow area to reflect light around or just paint the walls white, or use tinfoil( not recomended personally). when it hits flower its gaunna smell so ur gaunna have tae think of a filter but u can make these or use air fresheners. i use a grow tent, u get everything u need in one package . go on ebay and look at them, itll give u sum ideas and u mite decide to save for one. when it comes to what u want to grow in soil is the cheapest. i use b&q potting soil for seedlings and miracle grow for the next stage( sum people dont like it but it works for me).

i just had a look on ebay( just type in grow tents) u can get a full tent with light and extracion/carbon filter for just over £200, thats a fuckin bargan. u can easily get 5plants in them( thats the 1.2mx1.2x2m).

I agree with the earlier poster..........Spend your money on the light.........get the best you can afford........Not sure the conversion rate but I saw a cheapo switchable ballast 400 watt on ebay for right at $200.........this is perfect for 1st timer....use MH bulb during veg and HPS during bloom........
You can start in potting soil, hand water, milk carton for a pot...............and work your way up over time, if you desire...to the point of a full on Hydro setup of your choice..... It is most definitely not a cheap hobby beyond this point....you have to constantly reinvest....bulbs, timers, and pumps often go bad within a year or two......a ballast will die when you can least afford it, etc...and we haven't even started on the high tech side....NFT timers, CO2 generators, controllers, chillers, etc, etc, etc..........
If you were here, I'd tell you to get your mmj card, then buy clones and just do the budding........the cost of the clone is likely cheaper than the cost of growing from seeds, you waste no time with males and only need a single space on 12/12 light cycle......cutting electric costs, equipment costs, nute cost, etc... you're allowed 6 plants, so you start a new one every week or two(depending on bloom time for strain) and harvest one the same day....keeping only 6 at a time and harvesting on a regular basis.....
best of luck!!
