    • I have a 250w cfl and it is a huge light bulb...since i didnt get a reflector i got a e40 plugin attachment what ways does anyone suggest to hold it up? if i use strings will it burn through the strings etc? i have no choice but to tie it directly contacting the bulb to hold it at a vertical angle so any advice? i dont want the bulb to burn through the string fall and then smash into loads of pieces

Pictures of what your talking about would be helpful. I use CFLS and am always looking for a beter way to hang them.

That's why I use 42W 6500K bulbs to veg(smaller and available at Menard's Home Centers). That bulb you have is a monster. I doubt it will burn through, but there has to be a better way of installing it...of course we need pics to see what you did.

unable to show pics at the current moment, but i turned it on to test it and after half hour it was very hot, not sure if my ez rollers would support the temperature without tearing i would say its worth a try but its not really when the bulb can just rip...
when do i need to have the light on the plants? they are currently tiny stems which have just sprouted still with the seeds on the tip of them stems

Minimal lighting is fine, no need for high intensity at this stage...but I need to retract my previous comment in part. That bulb will burn through/weaken any fabric touching it over time.

I imagine the e40 socket has to have some kind of base to it; why not just screw it onto a piece of wood, then use eye hooks to tie it up and suspend it.

Another idea is, if you wanna do some work, make a triangle out of 3 2x4s.

Here, I drew it in paint!

Basically, screw the socket onto the wood triangle with two U-Bolts, the bulb is free to float in the middle, and the eye hooks give you a place to tie the light up.

I also discovered I'm God-awful at paint and should never try drawing with it.

I like the idea, in fact I'll be using it when I add more bulbs after the holidays.

TY!

Edit: I found a cable for those bulbs as well:

Don't let the bulb float around, my 125 watt bulbs are too heavy for a standard socket, I've used electrical wire to support mine (wrapped around a screw and tightened), the socket is screwed into wood as described.

So it will unplug itself if left upside-down?.

I think thats what he means but thats not the case here it is not upside down the ez rollers are completely support its weight vertically just above the seedlings

I would be terrified of having it hang from just the socket. Even with tape, It could easily unplug and fall and break or burn the plants and mess up their light cycle.

Maybe with a big cfl like i have but smaller cfl's should not be a problem even without tape

Oh no, your right on that; smaller ones shouldn't be a problem.

In fact, I've see a few growers user hanging work lights for their cfl (obviously removing the protective cage) which gives them a hanging socket AND a hanging outlet to plug in other stuff.

Yes some growers are very imaginative, a friend of mine has designed what i guess i would describe as a stealth grow box just not stealthy which is a fish tank with the lights, aeroponics, dripper system the whole lot, we just haven't come around the time or money to experiment with that yet although i may do one day as its a great idea.
