Hempy light problems

I've heard it is not good to let roots get light. But then I've seen people's Hempy systems using 2 liters and they seem to grow fine. So how detrimental is it for the roots if they are exposed to light?

Light doesn't hurt the roots. I've grown in plenty of clear containers up to 2 liter in size. Light can allow green algae to grow but it doesn't seem to be a problem in soil. Hydro might be a problem.

I've got 4 large terrariums that always have green algae solid below the soil line and it doesn't seem to hurt anything.

Nutes/water + light = algae

Algae robs nutrients and air from roots.

Usually peeps with the 2 liters paint the bottom clear half with spray paint.

Algea in any large amount is not good. I grew in hempy for a while before switching to ebb n flo. I used five gallon buckets full of perlite. The perlit would always get a green film on it and it was never an issue. Every liter grow I have seen the bottles have been wrapped in tape or painted. Real simple step to avoid issues, I mean why risk it right?

When I made the bottles myself, I took the 2 liter label off because it made it easier to work with, actually just using them as normal buckets right now. I've got perlite in the bottom 2.5 inches and then a mix of 1:1 perlite/potting mix. I think it was in Jorge Cervantes Ultimate Grow that I heard about the lights on the roots and I was like oh shit, just cuz I don't want to run into problems, but yeah it'd probably be pretty simple to throw some duct tape around it and fix it now.

Look at home depot for hot water heater wrap.

that would be my first choice, reflective, insulated, self adhesive.

they sell it in rolls with 2' tall by 10' long, it's like a huge roll of tape sliver outside then insulation 1/16" thick then very sticky stuff.

I had a extra clone and ran a side by side test in a clear container just for shits and giggles. I was using 2 liter bottles hempy style and left one clear. Perlite in the res and coco/perlite @ 3/1 for the main medium. Feeding was exactly the same for both containers as well.

The clear one developed green algae in the res area within 2 weeks under 600w hps. 3 weeks after that it was visibly smaller than it's neighbor that was actually further away from the light. It would also dry up it's res about 25% faster than the other. A few weeks later it's buds were light and fluffy while the other was tight and chunky. Also the algae had crept up to near the top of the medium and the entire inside was a nice green color. The visible roots weren't the best looking I had ever seen either.

I usually take everything I read with a grain of salt until I do my own studies. The recommendation to keep light out of your pot is spot on.

I got tired of all the duct taping(the black tape is about 8buks a roll round here).I started using only green bottles(ginger ale).Been doing it about a year and it works just as well.I may be fooling myself tha tgreen makes a difference, but I haven't tried with clear bottles n no tape
