Hlg-240-2100a w/ 4 cxb3590s

im a complete noob journeying to build my first led grow light using the info on all the threads. ive been looking at the 240-2100a with 4 36v cxb3590s, and from my novice calculations, it seems like the right amount of power for the cobs for the incremental $10 price over the 1700a - but i dont see a lot of people using the 2100a, maybe since its newer and has less stock?. can someone vet this and give their opinion? any suggestions or critiques are welcome as id like to place an order in the next few days

better to be high than fried..

The trend has been to run the big Cree at about 50W (or lower) for efficiency. Your proposal won't work--the COBs would be 75W each and the driver only does 250W.

I would recommend the Mean Well
HLG-240H-C1750A

This is a new model designed for series circuits and would run a COB at: 1750mA x 36V = 63 Watts (nominal, the Cree Product Characterization Tool says 62W, and 248.5W total). http://pct.cree.com/dt/index.html

Edit: I don't see any of those Mean Wells available right now.

That driver has a max 119V. Each cob would be using a solid 36V so three of them would be 108V and 4 would be 144, or more than that driver could give in series.

ok thanks guys that makes sense..unfortunately i just bought the last 2100a...but just so i learn correctly i have a few followups if you would be so kind to help...,, using the 2100a would only make sense to drive 3 cxb3590s really hard, but for efficiency the 1750a with 4 cobs would be industry std ? also, since the wattage going to the chip will be ~60, would it make sense to go with the cheaper cxb3070s? i dont see how i will get bang out of the buck until i would upgrade the PS to provide them more juice.

oh, and if theres an extended wait on the 1750s, what would your next recommendation be?

i think there is a good thread by supra on matching drivers to COBS - no point re-inventing the wheel....

I can run a max of 3 36v chips in serial on that driver, but not anymore to exceed the max output voltage?

ty grouch.. so the 1050ma would be for parallel, but then the total wattage per chip would be around 30, good for efficiency, but not so much for growth?

ty sanjuan, ive contacted Nuonan/Karen and am working to put an order for the 1750a models with dimmers. im still on the fence about 3070s vs 3590s here, but either way not a bad option. appreciate your help & time

3 3590s in series would do fine on that driver. Or you could run 2 in series, 2 in parallel at half wattage if you want an even 4 cobs. I'd just toss them in series and rock a triangle light. ~36,500 lumens for 3 cxb3590 36v @ 2.1A

Or 6 cxb3070s in series parallel for 2 strings of 3 cobs all at 1050mA each. ~38,400 lumens for 6 cxb3070s 36v @ 1.05A

I would go with vero29 at this intensity...no point on running cxb @2100mA...maybe cxa!
I guess at this intensity cxb and vero are close in efficiency!
