"HO" fluorescents vs. "CFL"

I see a lot of posts referring to using the compact fluorescent lights for propagaion and am wondering if there is a reason for using them rather than the high output fluorescents, besides the obvious space considerations.

Is there any fundamental difference between the two types of lights?

If someone had unlimited space to grow, wouldnt the large HOF's be better to spread light coverage over a wider area? If the HO tubes are about 5k lumens each, would 12 tubes over a 15 square foot area give sufficient illumination for propagation if lowered to just above the plant tops? Or is there another reason I should use CFL's for this area?

These questions have been asked before undoubtedly, and I do my homework but am having a hard time really finding a concise answer on this; would hate to purchase the wrong items.

Compact FluorescentPlant Grow Light SystemsCompact fluorescent technology has expanded the frontier for high output, low heat indoor plant grow lights. These relatively inexpensive systems produce a more concentrated fluorescent light that is excellent not only for starting seeds and seedlings, but for growing bedding plants, leafy vegetables, herb gardens, african violets, bonsai trees, cacti, succulents, orchids, tropicals and other plants generally up to 24 inches in height, as well.

VS.

High Output Fluorescent Tubes & Fixtures Super high output fluorescent tubes and fixtures. These incredibly bright fluorescents produce twice the amount of light emitted by standard fluorescent growing tubes. Great for starting seeds and seedlings, intensive propagation of cuttings, growing bedding plants, leafy vegetables, herb gardens, african violets, bonsai trees, cacti, succulents, orchids, and other plants generally less than 36 inches tall. Measuring a mere 2.5 inches in height, these extremely low profile fixtures are especially suited for tight vertical growing spaces.

i'm using regular shop lights for veg and cfls for cloning. i'm changing my shop lights to t5s. brighter light less power.

So what exactly does T5 mean, is that related to the inert ingredients of bulb as opposed to other type fluorescent lights, or is that the shape of the bulb? The wattage? The output spectrum? Are either or both of the lights in my initial post T5?

I guess I could sum up my original question as:

Are these the same thing:
Compact Fluorescent Plant Grow Light Systems
High Output Fluorescent Tubes & Fixtures

(Besides the shape and maybe the wattage)

?????

No.

CFL's are made from the same T5 tubes and technology as the HO Fluorescents, but simply compact the long tubes into a smaller form factor. Smaller size = more directly focused light.

Pick whatever system best suits your requirements - HO tubes, T5 tubes or CFLs. Just make sure you get the colour temperature right for clones and seedlings - you want about 6500 kelvin.

T5's are the next generation of flourescent tubes - they're thinner in diameter, use an electronic ballast for ignitning and control and are therefore more energy efficient and use better mixes of gases.

But also a bit more expensive..at least here...anyway, fluoros are a good light source with, imo an excellent quality/price ratio...i use them for veg and clones and im real happy with the results...i supose i could yield a bit more if i used HID to veg, but i also want to keep my electric bill low and i do flower with a 400w HPS wich is more then enough for me....
