DeMint said if someone is openly homosexual, they shouldn't be teaching in the classroom and he holds the same position on an unmarried woman who's sleeping with her boyfriend — she shouldn't be in the classroom.

“(When I said those things,) no one came to my defense,” he said. “But everyone would come to me and whisper that I shouldn't back down. They don't want government purging their rights and their freedom to religion.”

you can't make this stuff up. demint (republican from south carolina) has not apologized for the remarks, but has stepped back to saying it should be a local school board issue.

what do you think? vote in the poll or yell into the computer.

this is the alternative to the democrats, everyone. ain't america great?

I meant to say allow both. I first read it as neither should be barred. It's a pot site, make it easy on us lol

Demint is way off base here imo. Government run entities should not be allowed to discriminate.

The problem is we either allow the bible into the schools or not. If we do than they shouldnt be able to teach. The propblem is nobody wants to choose 1 side or the other.

forgot this in my stonedness
I believe Demint is playing politician. He is talking Tea Party when he says move things to a local level which I agree with. BUT I believe he is still appealing to his constituents in SC based on his original comments from 2004. He is now treading lightly so as not to upset his them as well as trying to keep his Tea Party ideals. I'm sure someone with knowledge of that area can shed some light on my guess

way i see it is
unless the school is a church run school then the only place for any religion is in religious studies.
it should not be part of school policy nor should it included in science or sex ed classes,
children should not be made to wear crosses, burkas or bindi's but shouldnt be banned from doing so if that is their wish
creationism should not be in the curriculum and anyone trying to pass science exam with it should be marked down appropriately

The GOP is about to engage in an internal "war" for control of the party, they are waiting until after the mid term elections.

It seems like Demint has become the voice and face of the social conservative/Christian wing of the Tea Party/GOP already in Washington.
He is very much a Christian social conservative, a member of C Street he supports the full ban on abortion, views homosexuality as immoral, is a favorite of The Club for Growth, supports prayer in school, bla bla bla.

He has made no bones about his wish to "purify" the GOP. He just threatened to in effect shut down the Senate with a procedural move. If he and his allies in the party do take control of the GOP any and all hints of moderation in the GOP will be wiped away.

Oops looks like the bad wording completely fucked up your poll. Now most of us look like a bunch of Gay bashers and pregnant mother haters.

I voted both, anyone can be a great teacher.

I agree that the wording is poor, my interpretation is that both should be banned or neither should be banned so you voted that both should be banned. clearly not your intention.

The question clearly says "
Should gays and or unmarried & pregnant women be allowed to teach?"

Both means you want both to be able to teach, clearly it was my intention. and those choosing neither are choosing that neither gays nor pregos should teach. Obviously if you pick neither you are a gay hating woman hater.

This guy is a dufus.
I am a conservative, right-wing Christian....and I know full well that this type of puritan governing(sp) will never fly in this country.

He can think what he wants. I believe everyone should stick to their principals. But in my opinion, he has basicly signed his political death certificate...regardless of where he's from or who he's representing.
And I'd also be willing to bet other republicans will aviod him like the plague.

These though, are pretty much all but non-issues in congress at the moment. They are not deciding and haggling over who can teach. Abortion is a decided issue as well. Currently it's legal. Anyone who tries to stick their political shovel into the abortion/legality issue will get nowhere. We simply have many more pressing matters to tackle. If he has an IQ much over 40, then he knows this too.
Therefore, what it leads to is the fact that he's probably just trying to get votes in his area.
Sad.

and once again, i apologize for the poor wording of the poll....i will stab myself in the nipple with a spork as an act of attrition.

If their were more homosexuals you would have less pregnant unmarried teachers. In responce to the O.P. I'm ok with it as long as they don't let them teach sex-ed and birth controll.
