Sorry, SnakeGriz, I try to use the real words so you can google stuff up a bit as you wish! For nature though, if you can find forest floor, aka leaf mould, or rotting wood chunks, that look like this, (see attachment) then those would act as aeration and water retainers too. Some of the best stuff available to mankind is made by Mother Nature herself. Might be hard to find or take a while to collect and make, but soooo worth it once you acquire it.

A chunk of hardened lava would be the shit, but I don't suspect you live in Hawaii or near an active volcano! Also, shells from crabs, or insects, can make a great source of chitin, for helping the plants make chitinase. Look up what that is! It causes amazing autoimmune responses essentially
