i have a 400w and a 1000w hps light and i was wondering how many plants i would be able to grow under each for maximum growth.

Too many variables to answer concisely. IMO go safe, grow less, grow bigger 1000w 4 plants= big colas. Anybody feel free to argue the point.
400w 24plants sog.

Similar yield, less sentence for the 4 plants under 1000watter in the UK, probably only a caution with no previous. 24 under sog 1-3 years!
