Hello everyone. I'm new here. Its nice to meet ya'll.

I have some quick questions.
1) I am in veg state. My baby is under light for 24 hours a day, is this correct? Or should it have a rest period?
2) How many weeks before i should take my baby off of veg state and go to flowering state?
-a)How many weeks from intial planting before i tell if my baby is male or female?
-b)During flowering state, what should be the time schedule? 10 on, 14 off?

Basically what is happening here is I am growing 1 at a time until i get the timing, watering, etc straightened out, then i'll plant more babies. While i am growing 1 at a time i want to know when i can tell if it is male or female. i dont want to waste many many weeks before i find out it is male so i can throw it away.
Thank you for help.
Hopefully i can post pics as things progress later on.
:peace:

1) 24 hour light is fine
2) veg until plant is about 1/3 to 1/2 of the way to its maximum height you want to get it.

a)anywhere from 7-12 weeks, BUT some plants just won't show preflowers no matter what, those you have to put into flowering.

b) Flowering is 12 hours of lights on followed by 12 hours of uninterrupted darkness.

You will waste time growing a male, nothing you can do about that, you just have to wait until it shows sex, no way to rush it or tell otherwise. sorry, thats just the way it is. That is also the main reason people plant multiple seeds, so there is a better chance you will get a female.

Thank you.
Maybe I should plant 1 more, this way i have 50/50 chance i suppose.
Also, my pot is about 10 gallons (40 liters) at minimum , maybe even 15 gallons or more. Is this good for the duration of my baby's life?

if your growing indoors i suggest you put it on 12\12 when it reaches 10-12 inches if you wait for it to preflower you could end up with a 10 foot plant at the end of flowering and how are ya gonna pull that off keep em small indoors or your lighting wont do much unless you got an hid at the top and like 50 cfls all around from top to bottom good luck

This is my baby. Only 5 days old and it has been under the 24 hour light schedule for only 1 day now. It is about 5 inches tall. I am planning on buying more pots (preferably clay ones as opposed to the plastic one i have this in.
As i get more money i will get mylar and things like that. But for the time being i think that is over kill for 1 plant :P

plastic pots are fine... what light you got on it and how close... if ur usein cfls then get it about 2 inches away or it will streach and you do have a fan on it right

Im very lucky i had 1 seed grew in to a 5 foot monster female, almost 8 week in, i aslo sproted 7 more and ended up giving 4 away as they were outgrowing my hood with, and the 3 i kept turned into 3 girls, now 5 week in, i must be v-lucky

I dont have the compact flourecent lights, i have long tubes (because i was thinking about later on when i want to expand the operation).
they are typical lights for growing vegetables from a hardware store.
they are about 4 inches away from the baby.

So what you're saying is, if it is not 2 inches away, that the plant will stretch? By stretch, do you mean its just going to grow too tall and skinny?

I had read about the 2 inch rule before, but i was skeptical thinking it might burn the baby.

cool!, i've done this once before with a friend but do to "issues" we had to get rid of the crop. it was at my friend's place. out of about 15 plants, i think 10 were female...
we got rid of it right when they were starting to flower ... it may not have been a good crop anyway though, we didnt know what the hell we were doing with the light schedule

Also, my pot is easily over 10 gallons.
is this enough for the life of this plant?
what size pot is enough for the life of a plant? or is there a recommendation of X gallons per foot of growth maybe?

i got two of those long flourecent lights... should i replace them with the compact flourecent lights i hear about? the lights i have are the typical ones used from growing vegetables from a hardware store.

also, is there a trick to getting ur plants small and bushy? or is it dependant on the strain of maryjane you got that will make it tall and thin or short and bushy?

10 gallons is actually a huge pot. It will definitely be large enough for the life of the plant. I'm using hydroponics but the soil growers seem to prefer starting with a smaller pot and then transplanting. That's something you might want to consider if you start another plant. I'm using the fluorescent tubes now until I get my HPS light set up. The compact fluorescents are better because you can focus the light on the plant better. If you're planning on using fluorescents throughout the grow I would go with the cfls.

Indicas tend to be short and bushy while sativas tend to stretch out more. Genetics aside keeping the light close to the plant will make it less likely to stretch which is what you want to avoid outgrowing your space.

cool.
i elevated my pot using some extra tiles i ahve from retiling the kitchen. i brought it up to about 2 inches from the light as recommended by another user. previously it was about 4 inches away.

do they make CLS lights for growing vegetables 'n stuff? if they do it will be to my benefit to use them as they take up much less space anyway! :-)

Thanks

Is fish emulsion a good fertilizer?
If so, at what stage of growth should i use it?
how many times per week?

it is great for your plaants depends on the n-p-k the stuff i have used in the past was 4-1-1 higher first number use in veg

you dnt wanna feed that thing til its like 3 weeks old

ok, cool.

also, some ppl say stop veg and start flowering whenever you are about 1/2 or 2/3 of the height you want your plant which sounds logical i suppose. some other people are talking about "nodes" or something?... dang i forget the word like "my plant has7 nodes and i started flowering" somethin like that. whats that business all about?

well you can stretch a plant to a foot tall with 3 nodes if you dnt have your lighting close enuff or not enuff or you can have a 1 foot plant with 10 nodes if done right but generally your plant will grow 2-3 times in hight during flowering so thats why ppl say to flower when you get to a third of yhe hight you wanna finish at... so if your room is 6 foot you got a foot for your light a foot for the pot and leves you with 4 foot for your plant so you wanna flower at a foot so you have enuff room always give yourself a lil extra room just in case:peace:

My fish emulsion is 5-1-1. 2 more weeks and my baby'll be 3 weeks old so i'll give it some food
Hey bro,
So i took your advice and read that info on lighting.
I bought two 23 watt CFL (100watt equivalent if incandecent). anyway, each puts out 1,600 lumens. Its one of those "day light" ones, so it has 6,500K temperature. I bought two of those, and a... errrr cone shaped fixture to put them into. I also bought a Y shaped splitter to fit them into the same fixture.
Total cost
$20.10

Now, i'm lookin at these bad boys and the first word that comes out my mouth when i turn it on is "oh shit!" cause they're SO damn bright compared what what i had before. it really hurts my eyes to look into the lights. where as before i was lookin right into the lights, no problem...

Anyway, considering the new set up and all, do you recommend my baby be only 2 inches away still? or should i let it run like this for a full day and see what happens? I'm just worried about over exposure to light or somethin, cause they're damn bright compared to what i had before.
The pictures dont do justice to show how bright it is :P, but i'm sure if you've seen the types of lights i'm talkin about you know how bright it is.

FYI, as small as it is, its already smellin a lil skunky :-)

Any pointers as to adjustments or modifications i should make are more than welcome buddy :-P

As you can see, the pot is HUGE (i figure, better safe than sorry)
