how to best slow the role of nosy landlords?

these old folks need to offer a little privacy. i dont think they are used to renting and are often found in my area for no reason. their place is nice but has had a few plumbing problems. I did not break pipes on the inside of the wall but still they are all over me. how are you guys dealing with landlords that want your key, nosy, ect.?

Tell them you are a very private and spiritual person who dosn't like to be disturbed... on my lease the land lord needs to give me one months notice to check the property once a year and once only!!!!

Unfortunately there are landlords like that all over. Some are very nosey and it's annoying. If you're growing I would consider moving it into somewhere with secured privacy.

Find another place to live.

You could also appeal to their sensibilities by discussing your need for privacy and laying out a set of agreed upon announced entry procedures. But if they're not used to renting that might raise as much suspicion as putting padlocks on the doors you want to keep closed.

i found out that the plumber is a friend of mine. he said they peaked behind my tapestry curtain- totally not cool- no one gets in to see the wizard not no one not no how- there were other tapestries in place so they could not see but im worried they are gonna creep some time on their own when im at work. if there are no more "emergencies" they should never find my own lock on the door. This emergency thing is crap- if there is a fire you run away from it, not into it.

Look up the renter laws in your state and see what rights you have in keeping the land lords out and maintaining your privacy.

The Right to Enter The Apartment
A landlord may generally enter the apartment at reasonable times and upon reasonable notice for these reasons:

To show the apartment to prospective tenants, purchasers, lenders or their agents;
To inspect the premises;
To make repairs;
To inspect within 30 days of the end of the tenancy to determine damages to be deducted from the security deposit;
If the premises appear to be abandoned; or
Pursuant to Court order.

to inspect?- not what i want to hear thats worse than the emergency shtick

As donmajicjuan's post explains, the landlord has very limited access rights once he has rented the property. He must give notice and he must have a legitimate reason. He is not allowed to enter the property at will.

However, if you are growing illegaly and you have an intrusive landlord, this doesn't help. If he does enter the apt and discover your grow he may be breaking the law but if he goes to the cops, I think that's all they need for a search warrant.

Hi Don--For years I lived next door to my landlord in a duplex! It was hell! She was a good landlord in that she repaired things immediately, but it's just the fact that you are living in their home. Even though it might be zoned for tenants it is still THEIR home and they're going to watch everything you do. Your comings and goings, who your friends are, what kind of hours you keep, etc...and you mentioned that they are not used to renters--hmmmm--it sounds like you have quite the quandary. But if you really like the place and they seem to be half decent and you like to smoke or grow your own, level with them. They might be really cool about it. If that is absolutely out of the question, then it might be time to look for a place where the landlord does not live anywhere around the premises--preferably across town! But, again, if they are part way cool and you tell them "Hey, I have a few physical problems and the only thing that helps is by smoking pot--a lot of pot--and that is the only thing I'm doing over here that might not be totally legal--just see how the take it. They will either balk at the idea or they may turn around and give you your privacy and respect. That's a tough one, but it all depends on how cool these people are. Even old people can be cool--hey we were all young once :)

i think i may build a fort out of tapestries so that if they try to find the entrance to the grow room, they will get lost and give up. im suprised that its been this hard to find a chill situation/people that are cool with doing a weed thing

Yeah, I think that's about right.
Your landlord may not have the legal right to enter your apt when you're not there, but frankly, what are you going to do about it?
Complain to the cops?
Try to sue him?
If you really have a nosy landlord, you've got limited options:

a. Stop growing.
b. Move somewhere else.

Incidentally, while you *might* be able to find a landlord sympathetic to your growing, unless you're living in hippie-land like CA or Oregon, I wouldn't count on it.

In most of the USA growing pot is still illegal under State law and worse, in some jurisdictions property used in the commission of drug offenses can be seized WITHOUT DUE PROCESS.

In other words, in some jurisdictions a landlord could lose their property if a tenant is caught growing pot on it. . .even if they had no idea it was happening.

So even if a landlord doesn't really care if you smoke or grow pot, he may have pretty good reason not to want it happening on his property!

i would go down to the local sex shop and buy the biggest damn strap on dildo that i could find in the place, fuck it, buy three or four of those fuckers, and then come home and hang them over the mantle..
after that, build a cross on the other wall and bolt a pair of handcuffs to them.. this should keep them out of your crib, unless they're the really freaky style, in which case invite them over for a good time.. :)

I have had similar past experiences...had 2 huge moms growing in the bathroom at an apt...then maintenance decided to come in one day and steal them...I cannot (of course) prove it....but I knew it was them cause no break-in and they left a notice mentioning their "inspection"

Knew it as tru when I came across that exact strain in the neighborhood just a month or so later...but hey...shit happens...

Now, I live in a house I rent, keep a simple security system running through the day (about 200 bucks on newegg.com for 5 cameras and a 80GB DVR box) that records 24 hours and I just play it on super speed when I get home from work (usually takes only a few minutes) to view who/what swang by during work....if nothing, then just leave alone and the system overwrites itself...if something interesting, rip and safe for later reference.

Best thing to do is invest in a security system...and put a camera in obvious sight of anybody...a good warning message of "Smile! You're on SO-AND-SO's camera!" makes for some hilarious footage too....plus you can always send your videos to Americas Funniest Home Videos and win money...lol

Or you can always just hide all cameras out of site to catch the snoopers....either way...in the end you may end up with some "compromising" footage of your neighbor/landlord/local kids doing something that (when shown to them) keeps their mouths shut about anything you are doing...

...just an idea...
