How to clone?

I have read a couple of the threads and things about cloning but I still have alot of questions. I would like it if people could post their favorite ways and go into detail.

What about if the cut part of stem is kinda brown?(water method)

What exactly are the parts you can cut for cloning? All I can find are crappy mspaint drawings?

can you top a plant and root that? I keep reading "no".

some people say the water method takes 2-3 days and some say 7-14 days. some also say to use rooting hormone and others say not to.
