How To: DWC

Hey VO, from what I recall, you're not moving water through a recirc with a submersible pump, right? I just checked out this Heath method, and also took a peek at sqydro's DWC Without Air Stones thread, and I think res temps appear the largest issue; are you referring to filling h2o bottles and freezing them for res insertion? Just how much more strict do you think the temps have to be in a non-stoned system (hehe...so to speak)?
The only difference I could see is the possibility of needing lower temps for more oxygenation in a recirculatory system that doesn't have air stones.

I freeze big water bottles and put them outside of the rezes in water.. kinda like a freezing moat.

Oh...ingenious yet again! I tried this IN res (remember, I'm still pretty new) - that was a fiasco. I dig the external chill idea; you oughta' post a quick DIY for cheapskates like me (if you haven't already). - happy oxygenating!

I believe Heath kept his temps around 19 degrees celcius, which was somewhere in the middle between where DO uptake improves and roots are able to use it. He figured it was the ideal temp. He suggested if you have to use airstones (he didn't think it was necessary if you had a nice steady waterfall going based on his readings and certainly his experience and results speak highly) to use them only in the main res as it's a bit easier to regulate temps in the main res.

First post..first go at grow..couple questions..what do you clean out the buckets with (dwc 5 gallon) when you change res? I was thinking of have extra buckets so i can pull them out of one res right into a fresh bucket with nutes/water, any problems/concerns with doing that? last question for now (sure there will be a ton more) i have a 5ft*3ft space with a 1000w light to work with. How many plants would you suggest to grow (dwc, 5gal buckets) for a first timer? Thanks for any and all help.

I just clean them with hot water/sponges. REALLY hot water in the bath tub, I think I'm close to the water heater.

I also use h2o2 treatments now.. which you can't do if using organics/microbes. I have some editing to do on the sticky anyway, thanks for the reminder.

There are alot of grows where people do a DWC but with 2 plants in a big cooler or something, is this still inviting root competitioning? Seem like alot of them get manage it, also, are there any good complete RDWC packages out there? ive only seen autopot and ive heard that it is very hard to adjust and maintain PH and EC in the autopot, im just planing on running a 4 plant dwc grow, and thinking that 4 individual bubblebuckets might be alot of maintanance work in the length? so im thinking 2 big reservoir with 2 plants in each or a RDWC with 4 bubblebuckets and a external reservoir. do you have any recomendations? Great thread man :) sorry for my english its not my first language! saw the video on youtube too man great

If you can, DIY. Putting something together is easy and a whole lot cheaper.

Also, I don't ever suggest more than one plant per reservoir unless they're for cloning or 12/12 from clone (maybe.) You're taking more risk that way.

Thanks VO! Unfortunately i dont have those DIY skills do you know of a good finished set? Also i was afraid that the part about the Autopots being hard to stabilize counts for all connected DWC systems, that they are very hard to mange the PH and EC. How much work is it to adjust the PH and EC and everything of each bucket? is it completely impossible to run like 12 seperate bubblebuckets or is this just way too much work?

Yeah connecting buckets can seem difficult, but if you really want to run 12 you're going to need to, and I'm not the guy to talk to about RDWC. Why not just grow a couple monsters?

True that i think actually im going towards monsters haha :) Do you think 6 dwc buckets could be managable? thanks alot for the answers man :)

I will be doing my first DWC and I'm worried about messing up the nutes/water mixture. I am also unsure what type of nutrients I need to buy. Can I find good nutes at walmart/home depot/pet smart? or only from hydro store? online maybe?

Actually you could just go back a few pages you'll find where he taught me. I was exactly where you are a few months ago. After reading and asking a few ?'s I now have mother plants of 5 different strains. There are some really good growers here and Void is one. Ok enough ass kissing lol. It's been awhile. How you been Void?

Besides the troubling Bubble Cheese grow I've been good, out of the organic game now so things are looking up.

And you man?

VO question for you or anybody else...in a bubble bucket when you first start with a clone from what ive read the water should come into the bottom of the net pot about an 1" (correct me if im wrong) but how far should the bottom of the cube sit above that water line in the net pot??

1/2 an inch to an inch below the rockwool at first, then you lower it from there

thanks for that vo..i do have another one (and im sure tons more) when starting with a clone how far should the light (1000w) be from the top of the clone?? i assume its not the same as when veg or flower. My ballast is dimeable as well so do you think 1000w is to much? I could turn it down if so.
