HPS fire risk?

Hello,

Is a 150 watt HPS in a closet grow small space (18x18x36) be a fire risk? I have the ballast inside of a plastic tub and the HPS in a small spot with mylar flooring, but outside of the space is carpet. How do HPS get on fire? Also, is mylar fireproof? Do the HPS bulbs explode? Having the ballast in a plastic tub is bad? I purchased a 150 watt HPS system from HTG, but I am a bit skeptical to use it as I don't want to burn my house down. How hot do they get? etc

HELP PLEASE!

i would personally take the ballast out of the plastic tub. Hot items and plastic dont mix. Other than that i would just ensure the light is securely fixed, and that the electrical sockets etc are safe and away from water. :)

Damn, I have no where else to put the ballast. I can't put the ballast on the carpet. I am not too sure about this whole closet grow thing...Seems too risky to have all of these lights in a closet where there is carpet and can burn down the whole house when I am away.

You could always buy yourself a proper horticultural grow light. They are water-resistant, extremely reliable and a very low fire risk.

With regards to your ballast, you should raise it off the carpet by using something heavy, and heat proof. (a brick or stone for example)

Ok I will try to use the brick instead of the plastic tub. Thanks for comment.

If the ballast is separate from the hood and it sounds like it is. I always put a small fan blowing on the ballast box whenever the light is turned on. The fan comes on with the light. It keeps the temps way down on the ballast box and Im sure it extends the life of the ballast considerably.
Good luck.
