I am missing California and dreaming about another road trip. Thinking saltwater forest mountains wine for the wife and cannabis for me.
Havent been in no.cal in about 15 years so redwoods wine stop san Fran and sac. Are a must. Hollywood to say I did it. Beaches wilderness etc.
Idea is fly into portland OR rent a car and 7 or so days later fly out of LAX
Anyone done this? Can't miss spots?

Actually you mean US 101; Highway 1 begins in Legget (Mendo Co) Can't miss "Avenue of the Giants" between Fortuna (N) and Garberville to the south. Giant sequoias and the Eel river next to the road, it's a gorgeous mellow 32mi drive on State route 254, places to stop and play in the river and hike.

You won't be able to drive from Carmel to Cambria, H1 still closed on Mud Creek. You'll by pass that by taking Naciamiento/Ferguson Rd to H101. It's a nice but somewhat white knuckler in the coastal mountain part, narrow and very winding with long unprotected dropoffs takes you inland thru Camp Roberts (US Army base).
Oh yeah, on Camp Roberts is the old San Antonio Spanish mission, very very cool with a 300 yr old olive tree at the mission front door

Its getting cold here and can't help but to plan now. Yeah most likely July 2018 mother in law is a teacher with summers off to babysit.
