Detainees at the US military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba will be transferred to a prison the federal government will acquire in the state of Illinois, an administration official said on Tuesday.


"Today, the administration will announce that the President has directed that the federal government proceed with the acquisition of the Thomson Correctional Center in Thomson, Illinois to house federal inmates and a limited number of detainees from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba," the official said.

"Closing the detention center at Guantanamo is essential to protecting our national security and helping our troops by removing a deadly recruiting tool from the hands of al Qaeda," the same official added, noting: "Today's announcement is an important step forward as we work to achieve our national security objectives."



I garantee you this will be a very enticing target for our enemies, what better way to recruit more al queda fighters than attacking locations and security facilites where thier Jihadi brothers are being held. it would be a big moral boost for the enemy to attack this facility

these guys are not dumb they are known to do a small trick attack and then bust the real one out once the police and fireman converge on the location thereby killing many more

lock and load citizens of illinois your commander and cheif has put you in harms way for political reasons. Stay safe. hopfully nothing will come of this, we can only pray.

When I heard this on the news today, the reporter said something along the lines of how this was supposed to take away a huge recruiting tool for Al Qaeda...............There was no Gitmo detention center when they bombed the embassies in East Africa in '98. There was no Abu Graib when the USS Cole was bombed in 2000, and there were no forces in Afghanistan and Iraq when hijackers used 4 planes as huge missiles on 9/11/01. This won't make one iota of difference to the extremists. It will just give them another target on U.S. soil for them to aim for. Way to go Obama!

I saw some people being interviewed. Some were a bit nervous but most were happy about the decision saying their local economy needed it and they could handle it. I have faith that we are smart and strong enough to house a prison for accused terrorists and not let them dictate our actions. I live half the year in Illinois and within an hour of this facility.

i live close to thomson and this is scary to me for a few reasons.

first, they are trying to say this is going to help boost the local economy and there will be like 3000 new jobs in a very rural area.

problem is that most of the jobs are going to be military, which don't pay state income tax in illinois. also, they aren't producing anything. pay comes from taxpayers. that means we are going to take taxpayer money from all over US to pay salaries. that is not economy stimulus, it is rob peter to pay paul. plus why are iowa politicians involved in campaigning for this in illinois?

so, why do they try to sell it like that? it's obvious BS. Thomson was built in 2001 and held few prisoners since then. there is an overcrowding situation in IL state prisons, and we have a state of the art empty state prison...but they don't want to use it until now...hmmmmm.

they talk about all this safety and don't worry about them attracting terrorists to the area. to be honest, i'm not worried about that. i'm worried that the 'terrorists' and our government are one in the same. seems really convenient if there are future attacks to put it on these 'terrorists' or maybe there will be a 'terrorist' escape. then all of a sudden, martial law for our 'protection.'

that shit might sound way out there crazy but so is flying planes into your own buildings and exploiting the fear of the people as an excuse to commit genocide in the middle east. hmmmmm. oh, also, in the closest city near this place, they just cut 29 police. also, the governor is going to try to sell the building without going through proper legislative channels, instead as a state surplus building. give me a fucking break, at least Blogo wouldn't sell us out like this, well ok he probably would. i'm starting to think he was set up.

From the local paper, Congressman Don Manzullo said Tuesday that inquiries on the purchase price of the prison, and the risk level of the detainees who the military will detain at Thomson, are not being answered by federal officials.

the commission report / media says otherwise

but where i am from, no plane wreackage + no black boxes = no plane

(referring to flight 93 and the pentagon, no planes, no bodies, no black boxes)

Either at some point they are going to send them back to their own countries to be tried or jailed and tortured more there or they are going to have to kill them, they should just pick one now.
