Improving Sativa Strains for Frost/Freeze Resistance?.

The thread is buried somewhere now, but there was a brief conversation within it regarding this topic. I have been avoiding outdoor sativa in-grounds/late flowering strains due to short growing seasons. This winter I intend on growing a mother malawi gold indoors 4/cloning purposes. I have read here that it is possible to enhance cold weather genetics so to speak by performing the following:

When plant reaches 4th or 5th node ht., expose it to frost/freeze conditions for several hours. It must be done in at least a 1 gal container to avoid soil temps from dipping too low. Repeat this several times. The resulting offspring should be more tolerant to poor weather.

Has anyone tried this?. And if so how low of a temp is recommended?

Thanks in advance for any advice,

Biz

I had not heard of this doing anything for cold heartiness or for setting genes. I have found though that by the 4th or 5th generation of growing a plant in certain conditions my plants seem to become more tolerant without the need of introducing a new strain in the mix for the cold. I do admit that this is not a short term goal, but honestly don't know of any other shortcuts to adoptation of climate.
Good Luck

i don't know about that tech, but the 1st thing that came to mind is good old lowryder autoflowering tech. ruderalis is a cold friendly russian strain, so i'd imagine it would improve any strain's cold endurance, though it would take a few generations to keep it from diminishing your THC as it's really a hemp strain and the worst schwag to smoke.

maybe there's already a lowryder out there based on some highland mountain indica. that would be a good choice for crossing once you back cross enough generations to get an authentic malawi buzz. i tell you, i'm jealous you have the big M! i was watching afropips to restock his for over half a year before hearing he's no longer with us.
