Initial Roots

I'm new to growing herb, and I have a question that may come off somewhat "noobish".

I will be using the reservoir method, so in order for me to attain roots, could I just germinate the seedlings in soil for a bit, till they get some good sized roots, then transplant it to a perlite set up?

How long should I wait before transplanting? Thanks a lot in advance

no need to start in soil. either germinate the seed and then place into the pot of perlite or you could just place the seed directly in the pot and wait about a week for it to sprout. Its hard not to dig it up after a few days to see how its coming but resist temptation. If you keep transplanting ur adding more stress to the plants

what do you mean reservoir method? You going hydro, aero, bubble, ebb and flow, flood and drain??
I was thinking of using this: Hydroponics Growing Systems Explained One by One method. Seems promising in that it's pretty simple.

Another question: if i let the original seed germinate in soil and get some roots, then transplant, how long should I make sure the roots are so that they receive adequate nutes from the reservoir? Just enough to reach to the bottom of the pot?

Let me try to make it easier, don't start the plant in soil.

Now do you see? Start your plant in a hydro medium, and feed the roots from the beginning.
