Insurance question

So we got just under 50mm of rain in a few hours last night and the gutters couldnt keep up. Long story short the basement flooded. Lots of wet stuff but no major loss of anything valuable. My question is should i try and make a claim through insurance being that I have my grow going on or not. Given how insurance companies act towards us patients, i clearly havent told them about my grow. So any ideas or suggestions? We're in for 4 more days of rain this week and Id be lying if I wasnt worried

Tough call dude. First thing, check your policy for any "drug clauses". If they see your grow, there will be questions asked. Know what your policy says. I'll text my broker right now and ask his advice.

Calyx,

What kind of damages are we talking? Was the basement finished? Grow or not it may not be worth putting a claim in regardless. It's often cheaper to remediate the damages privately than pay higher premiums going forward.

Not to mention that grow will likely get you cancelled.

That sucks Calyx, no idea sorry can't be much help there. Definitely an area to tread carefully depending on the clauses in the policy and paperwork. I can't see it being an issue if it's not related to the grow and you have papers to grow but definitely worth checking out.

Not hearing good news from my Broker folks. I've PM'd CC some info to digest.

Basically, the water damage would likely be covered "if" it was not a result of the grow...but once they find out about the grow, they'll cancel the policy. If the Insurance Co's wanna be Diks (and they are), they could even claim fraud for non-disclosure of the grow. My broker has contacted a colleague who works for one of the big Co's to get his take on the issue. I'll post up whatever I learn.

That sounds like typical insurance policy, their job on a claim is to find an out so they don't have to pay up :(

tell them you grow a few tomatoes and other veggies and what not to put outside in the spring :)
who cares WHAT you grow and they dont have to know what you are growing
Its a light and if installed accordingly to electrical standard, should be just fine.
Extension cords and wires hanging are a no no..

Unfinshed part of the basement thankfully. All stuff stored away that got wet. Looks like its all a result of the knob who lives behind me. 2 summers ago he had interlocking brick installed in his yard and every since then it drains into my yard. Back yard is a lake as we speak.

Lastnight the water was gushing from his yard into mine and pooling along the foundation. Wouldnt be an issue if I only had to deal with drainage of my own property, but add his to it and we have my scenario. Im gonna call city bylaw services and see what they can do. 99%sure he never got permits for that shit

What if they ask to access the room to inspect for any damage (assuming the grow is in the basement where the water damage is)?

I would try and find a way to deal with the water yourself. They will cancel your policy. Sometimes sacrifices have to made...and while I understand that doesn't help, only you can decide how important your insurance us.

So...drainage tiles in the yard...

FYI....most policies will not cover foundation leaks. Foundation maintenance is homeowners responsibility.

Basically if a person has a claim that needs someone to come out...were all cancelled. So we really have no insurance is what is boils down to. Any serious issue will get a visit...see ya what insurance we already don't have. This is a real problem. And a example of unjust insurance bullshit as usual.

well then youd have to get rid of your grow for that time then...its hard but what else can be done? Its a bitch yes it certainly is..
I had issues over the years where they had to come in once to change the water meter...in my grow room.
then a few years later they came back to add an outdoor meter reader
..geesus if it wasnt enough the first time..
so I move my meter outside my room temporarily and then they installed the remote.
I put my meter back before I sold my house...
no it was not easy..but it was done and doable..
