Intake, exhaust & cooling fan Qs

Can someone please link me to a thread or explain to me about general air serculation in a grow cupboard? I have looked around and found some good stuff but I'm still a bit unsure. Can someone please treat me like I have never even heard of a fan and explain it to me from the abslute begginning. on how to properly air a grow room. I will be using a 400 watt HPS with a reflector that has a cool tube attached but with no fans. I'll be looking to keep it simple and cheap but would like if I could cool the lamp while I'm at it and would probably looking for DIY than spending lots of cash. My cupboard is made of wood, will I have to saw it up to add intake and exhaust fans? Can people also advise me where to get the tools needed for air circulation. Threads that I've read about it sem to take for granted that people have a decent enough knowledge on how it works, I find myself getting a bit lost. Any info is appreciated, thanks in advance.

There are three parts to grow room air circulation; cooling for lights, fresh air for the plants to breathe and air blowing onto the plants. Centrifugal fans like those from CanFan, Fantech and other companies are the most efficient for most grow applications. Cooling for lights should at least exhaust to outside the grow area. It's also helpful to intake cold air from outdoors or some other cool area. The plants need fresh air, preferably clear of any smoke, at all times. This doesn't diminish at night by any means. Lastly, air blowing on the plants helps decrease hot spots & manage heat, and also encourages thicker stems that are needed to hold large buds. An occilating fan is often used for interior circulation.

Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. What u've explained is pretty much all that I know so far. Can 1 Stanley Blower mod be used for intake, exhaust and to cool tube all at once? And then an occilation fan to blow on the plants? Or what's the simplest set up to ventilate the gorw room? Thanks again.

Depends on what you mean by simple. We always intake lamp-cooling air from a cool, shaded place outdoors and then vent it back outside again. Nine months out of the year, this keeps the lamps anywhere from cool to cold and then we take the summer off. This is what I'd call the "easiest" because the lamps don't cause heat in the grow area that you have to put more work into dealing with. The fresh air for the plants as well as the air blowing on them can then be provided by one other fan connected to a vent to fresh air. Because there's no heat generated in the grow area, this air can come from household, room-temp air without any extra temperature regulation.

So what are the esentials when it comes to air circulation around the grow room? An occilation fan should be no problem but would this cover the needs of a for a small enough grow cupboard? The cupboard is about 5 foot high, 4 wide and 1.5 deep. I will be growing 2 or 3 plants, with about 4 - 6 weeks veg and a 400 watt HPS. With the limited knowledge that I have and from the reading that I've done I think I'll also need an intake and exhaust fan, is this correct? If you were in my shoes how would you go about venting this room? Keeping cost down and as simple as you could. Thanks for your replies so far.

1.5 deep doesn't sound deep enough.

I take it that this cupboard is in the kitchen?
Does anyone care you are growing herb in the cupboard?
Will you be sealing this cupboard?

The cupboard is in my parents room and they don't know I'm growing.

Back to the point. Again, I am a complete noob. Could I saw a hole in the top of the cupboard and attach this http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/8/KitchenBath/RangeHoodsExhaustFans/BathroomExhaustFans/PRDOVR~0522702P/Broan%2B50%2BCFM%2BEconomy%2BBath%2BFan.jsp?locale=en ? How would the fan be powered? How could I conect it to a power source?
